South Africa safari prices range from US$150 per day to more than US$1,000, depending on your lodge, park, and trip style.
South Africa Safari Cost: 2026 Prices by Trip Length ranges from about US$555 for a basic three-day Kruger experience to more than US$3,400 for a three-night peak-season private-reserve stay. A low planning point is US$150 per person per day. Green-season travel and self-drive trips offer the best value in 2026.
South Africa Safari Cost: 2026 Prices by Trip Length depends on three main choices. These choices are your trip length, destination, and travel style. A self-drive Kruger trip costs far less than a private lodge stay. A scheduled group tour also uses a different pricing model from an exclusive reserve.
As of August 2026, a sensible low planning point is US$150 per person per day. Safari costs can rise above US$1,000 per person per day at luxury lodges. A short Kruger package may cost about US$555 for three days, while a longer routed itinerary can cost about US$2,820 for 12 nights. [1][6]
The right budget depends on what you want included. Some prices cover rooms, meals, game drives, and transfers. Others exclude flights, park fees, drinks, tips, and private activities. This guide breaks down South Africa Safari Cost by trip length, comfort level, and destination.
SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators. You can compare package prices, review trip details, and read authentic feedback before making a decision.
South Africa safari costs increase with each extra night, but trip length is not the only price factor. A three-day safari can cost about US$555 at the basic end. A 12-night routed safari example costs about US$2,820 per person. A luxury three-night private-reserve stay reaches about US$3,400 in peak season. [1][6]
Trip length gives you a useful starting budget. However, daily prices often fall on longer trips when transport costs spread across more nights. Luxury lodges remain expensive because they include more staff, private activities, premium meals, and smaller guest numbers.
| Name | Price | Duration | Rating | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Kruger safari | About US$555 | 3 days | Not stated | First-time and budget travelers |
| Listed South Africa package | US$1,045 per person | 4 nights | Not stated | Short city and safari breaks |
| Routed regional safari | About US$2,820 per person | 12 nights | Not stated | Travelers wanting several destinations |
| Private reserve stay | About US$3,400 per person | 3 nights | Not stated | Luxury and private-reserve guests |
US$150 to US$250 per day: This is a low planning range for 2026. It suits self-drive trips, basic camps, and selected scheduled tours. You may need to arrange some meals, transport, or park costs separately. [1]
US$250 to US$600 per day: This range suits many comfortable lodge and guided safari trips. It can include daily game drives, meals, transfers, and a good room. Exact inclusions still vary by operator and location.
US$600 to over US$1,000 per day: This range covers high-end lodges and private reserves. It often includes full-board meals, guided drives, drinks, and special activities. Peak-season dates can raise the price further.
Known for: South Africa offers many safari styles within one country. You can combine Kruger with Cape Town, choose a private reserve, or drive yourself between camps. That range makes South Africa a strong choice for travelers who want control over comfort and cost.
Compare South Africa safari packages by trip length and budget to find options from verified operators.
Kruger National Park is the best-known choice for safari variety, while private reserves suit travelers seeking luxury and close wildlife viewing. The best area depends on your budget, trip length, and need for guided service. South Africa also lets you combine safari time with Cape Town or other city stays.
Kruger is best for flexible planning and a wide choice of trip styles. Travelers can choose self-drive routes, scheduled tours, basic camps, or nearby private reserves. A basic three-day Kruger experience is listed at about US$555, making the park a useful starting point for budget planning. [1]
Kruger works well for families and first-time visitors. You can select shorter drives, stay in different camps, and control daily spending. Self-drive trips also reduce the cost of a private guide and vehicle. However, you must plan fuel, meals, entry fees, and insurance carefully.
Private reserves are best for travelers who want a more complete lodge experience. A three-night fully inclusive private-reserve stay is listed at about US$3,400 per person during peak season. This price shows how quickly luxury service can change the total South Africa Safari Cost. [6]
Private reserves often focus on guided drives and small-group service. Guides may spend more time tracking wildlife away from public-road limits. The higher rate can also cover meals, drinks, transfers, and activities. Check the package terms before comparing it with a self-drive trip.
South Africa offers other safari areas for travelers who want a different setting. Some visitors prefer a coastal wildlife route, while others add a reserve to a Cape Town holiday. Your best choice depends on the wildlife focus, road plan, and number of nights available.
For a wider destination comparison, read which part of South Africa is best for safari beyond Kruger. That guide helps you compare regions before requesting quotes.
Best for: Kruger is best for value and flexibility. Private reserves are best for luxury and guided service. Multi-stop routes are best for travelers who want a safari plus a broader South Africa holiday.
South Africa safari prices change with season, accommodation, transport, and inclusions. The same number of nights can produce very different totals. A self-drive trip can stay below US$5,000, while a short luxury stay can cost about US$3,400 per person. [3][6]
Traveling outside South African school holidays and European summer holidays can reduce safari prices significantly. These busy periods increase demand for rooms, vehicles, and guides. Green-season travel can also help you stay below US$5,000 for a wider safari trip. [3][6]
Ask operators for exact seasonal rates. “Low season” does not mean every lodge uses the same dates. It also does not mean every cost falls. Park fees, flights, and private transfers may remain separate.
South African park-entry fees do not become cheaper simply because you stay longer. Parks charge these fees on a separate basis, so a longer visit does not automatically create a lower daily entry rate. [3]
Review the full cost sheet before booking. Ask whether the quote includes:
A published 2026 package costs US$1,045 per person for four nights. The package advertises savings of US$980 per person. This example shows why you should compare the original price, sale price, travel dates, and list of included services. [5]
A 12-night route through Johannesburg, Victoria Falls, Hwange, and Cape Town costs about US$2,820 per person on a part-board basis. The route includes several destinations, but part-board service means travelers should check which meals and activities remain extra. [6]
Compare 2026 safari packages with your maximum budget and request quotes that show inclusions, exclusions, and seasonal dates.
For more detail, read what is included in a South Africa safari holiday in 2026. You can also review the guide to nine hidden safari fees before you book.
You can lower South Africa Safari Cost by choosing Kruger, traveling in the green season, and using self-drive plans. Start with a daily budget of US$150 per person. Then add flights, accommodation, food, park fees, and activities separately so your final estimate stays realistic.
Self-drive is best for independent travelers who want control over route and pace. Scheduled tours suit visitors who prefer shared transport and a planned itinerary. Private lodges suit travelers who want meals, drives, and service arranged in one package.
Safari pricing depends on trip length, destination, and travel style. A longer self-drive trip can cost less per day than a shorter private-reserve stay. However, private service can save planning time and add guided wildlife expertise. [1]
Compare the same room type, meal plan, drive schedule, and transfer service. A low headline rate may exclude park fees or activities. A higher rate may include nearly every daily service. Read verified traveler reviews to check whether the promised service matches guest experience.
Book outside major school and European summer holidays when possible. Consider green-season dates and self-drive Kruger trips. These choices can help keep a broader safari below US$5,000, although your flights and personal spending still affect the total. [3][6]
Use the seven smart ways to save on South Africa safari deals for more planning ideas. SafariFind also helps you compare verified tour operators, package terms, and authentic reviews in one place.
A South Africa safari costs about US$150 to over US$1,000 per person per day in 2026. A basic three-day Kruger experience costs about US$555, while a luxury private-reserve stay can reach about US$3,400 for three nights. Your lodge, season, transport, and inclusions set the final price. [1][6]
Kruger National Park is the best choice for flexibility, wildlife variety, and budget control. Nearby private reserves are best for luxury lodge stays and guided drives. Kruger also supports self-drive trips, which can reduce costs compared with a private vehicle and guide.
A seven-day South Africa safari does not have one fixed price because travel style changes the total. Use US$150 per person per day as a low planning point, then add flights and separate fees. A guided lodge trip costs more than a self-drive Kruger itinerary. [1]
South Africa safari travel is often cheaper outside South African school holidays and European summer holidays. Green-season travel can also help keep a wider trip below US$5,000. Ask each operator for exact dates because low-season rules differ by lodge and reserve. [3][6]
Park fees are not always included in South Africa safari prices. South African park-entry fees are charged separately and do not become cheaper simply because you stay longer. Check every quote for entry fees, meals, transfers, activities, and guide services. [3]

"Communications with Mack via email were swift and comprehensible. We were picked up at the airport on arrival by our guide, Thomas, who would be with us for the whole week. We signed up for a budget camping safari, and we had a great time! The campsites were nicer than I thought they would be, and the Kiliholidays team did a great job of taking care of us the whole trip. Thomas was very accommodating, and our 'stomach engineer' did a fantastic job the whole trip. My partner and I were very impressed by the quality of the food. Thomas was an incredible driver; a few times we had to stop and help other drivers who were stuck! This was my second visit to East Africa, and I will definitely book with Kiliholidays for my third trip :) A few tips for other travelers: The sleeping mattress was a bit thin for me (my partner had no trouble!), but I found that sleeping on my back instead of my side helped. If you have sensitive hips, I'd recommend bringing something to use as a cushion, or possibly arranging for an extra mattress. The tent was high-quality and the sleeping bags were warm. We stayed in Mto wa Mbu a few nights and it was quite hot there. We brought sleeping sacks (very thin) and used those instead. Bring LOTS of insect repellent and use it often (biting flies in the daytime, mosquitoes at night). Same with hand sanitizer (public campsite toilets don't usually have soap). Granola bars are a good idea, too, if you like to snack between meals. There's not a lot of access to ice, so if you like an evening adult-beverage, just ask your guide to stop before you leave Arusha to pick up some wine. We picked up a 5-liter box of South African wine for about 25euros and it was very convenient (bring your own cups!)."

"This is the second time I have traveled with my family with GoExplore. The first time was an amazing Uganda experience (already reviewed) and this second experience with my husband to Kenya was equally amazing. Brian organized organized both tours for me and tailored them according to my wishes. As this is still the time of unsure flights and Covid difficulties, he was easily able to adapt to some changes with travel that were beyond our control. GoExplore is a boutique business that is very personalized and offers you the equal and more than a large corporate operator. The price point is compatible with group tours but you will have your own personal driver and guide for yourself and there is nothing to compare with this luxury. Because of that, you will also be able to adapt your days schedule if you wish according what you want and not what is a groups plan. We were completely happy and satisfied with all aspects of our travel (on both trips). Brian knows the safari tour industry and is constantly working to improve the business, his knowledge about lodges, the parks, restaurants and all minute aspects of the tour. He will be able to personally attest to the quality of whatever product he is recommending to you. Sammi was our driver in Kenya and we can only say that he was amazing. He knew more about wildlife (and every birds name and details) than an encyclopedia, was an amazingly adept driver in sometimes rough conditions (traffic, rough park roads, etc.) and looked out for our interests. While respecting the animals, he went above and beyond trying to make sure we saw every different animal we could. We appreciated that he obviously respected and cared about the animals we were seeing. (Not all safari drivers do and will do anything to try to get to see something up close, even while encroaching too much on their space.) We had a minor vehicle difficulty and Sammi made sure that everything went smoothly and we didn't miss a minute of our trip or schedule. He is quite an asset to GoExplore. Sammi only drives on Kenya trips but if you go to Uganda, I highly recommend Moses who was equally great. Overall, the trip was an unforgettable trip of a lifetime. If you haven't gone on a safari before, you should trip to put this on your life plan. There is nothing like it and when you plan it, you want a safari operator that will listen to your needs, wants, and budget and tailor it to fit you. GoExplore will do that in a personal way. Our lodges that Brian picked were magical and the food was outstanding. There was nothing about our trip that we would have changed. I highly recommend GoExplore if you want to travel to any of the countries they operate in. If not those countries, then reconsider them over the more commercialized ones (such as South Africa) and you won't be disappointed."

"We just finished a 2-week tour of South Africa with extension to Victoria Falls and the Monde Village Cultural Experience was one of the highlights of the entire trip. It is a must-do for anyone in the area. Tongesai (our guide) was very personable and worked with us to customize the experience. He was flexible and took time to explain many things that aren't part of the "regular tour". We had great conversations throughout the tour. He ended up dropping us off so late (8:30pm), his wife had to call him twice. He took a few pictures with us so he had alibi. :) Mr Ncube (our village host) and his family were welcoming and excited to show us their way of life. Mr Ncube's explanations of his culture, family structure, farming struggles, and discussions on many topics showed us a simple way of life, much different than our modern American ways, but it made so much sense. People here fight hard to live but they do it with a smile. They may be poor, but not in spirit. We asked many questions and received questions ourselves. It was as if I was visiting an uncle living in a rural part of a third-world country. This family made us felt at home. We wish we had more time to sit under the summer kitchen during a raining day, sharing food and chatting with these folks. We wish we could sit in the winter kitchen to hear him teach his children and grandchildren. Needless to say, we spent 4+ hrs at this experience and wanted more. I am now back to "civilization" in a nice Qatari hotel, but I kept thinking about my time in the simple Monde Village. What a breath of fresh air that was. I brought some extra clothes to give, but ended up giving as much as I could live without for the rest of my trip. A pair of sandals doesn't mean much to me, but it means a lot to people in these villages. This is 30+ hrs flight from home so it is a one-time chance to help; I had to make the best of it. If I can come back to this area, I will definitely bring more people to share in this amazing experience. I encourage all who come to Victoria Falls to add this cultural experience to their itinerary."

"Cultural Vibes Travel and Tours has proved to be excellent yet again as this is now the third time, we have used them and a much-needed break after almost 3 years with the Covid pandemic. Tongesai is extremely reliable, professional, knowledgeable and does everything to make your trip a memorable experience. Compared to local larger companies, Tongesai’s individual package rates are more reasonable and come with a customized touch. We felt that our holiday with Tongesai was much better and suited us more so than if we had booked through a larger company. His individual tailoring, personal involvement and attention to detail pays off in the smooth running of your trip. Our visits to the Victoria Falls, both sides from Zimbabwe and Zambia were magnificent and never cease to amaze us. On this trip Tongesai arranged for a private sunset cruise on the Zambezi just for our family of four instead of on the larger vessels, which was a very pleasant alternative. The boat trip in Chobe is magical and a must if you venture into Botswana. Wildlife was in abundance, including lion, elephant, wildebeest, buffalo, puku, kudu, bushbuck, waterbuck, impala, gemsbok, steenbok, sable and roan antelope, etc. We even saw a relative of Cecil, the famous black-maned lion, ‘once a true king of Hwange National Park’. I have no hesitation in recommending the company for arranging tours in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana - we will definitely be seeing him again. He is currently setting up arrangements with colleagues in Kruger National Park to venture into South Africa and I wish him every success with that."

"We booked our Zimbabwe trip with Cultural Vibes Travel & Tours following a recommendation from Nhongo Safaris in South Africa. Tongesai is a great communicator, and the booking process was quick, easy, and well organized. We were happy with the quote provided and were able to easily pay online. Tongesai was waiting for us at Victoria Falls Airport to take us to our accommodation. He has arranged an amazing whirlwind 48 hour visit, that was packed with a sunset cruise on the Zambezi, Morning Game drive, he accompanied us on an amazing walk of the Victoria falls and arranged an African experience dinner in the evening. It was so memorable, and everything we wanted! Overall, it was an fantastic trip, with a great guide, and we would highly recommend it for anyone considering a trip to Victoria Falls. For our next visit, we will definitely be reaching out to Tongesai and thoroughly recommend to all our friends."
