Botswana does not have an ocean beach because it is landlocked. In 2027, travelers can enjoy inland water trips on the Okavango Delta and Chobe River, then add a beach stay in Mozambique. Combined safari and beach holidays cost about $4,175 to $6,295 per person and last 9 to 15 days, depending on the itinerary.[1][2][3][4]
Botswana has no ocean beach, yet its wetlands, rivers, and salt pans create a very different kind of water trip. This is the simple answer to “Does Botswana Have a Beach? 2027 Lake Shores and Safaris?” The country is landlocked, so you will not find a sea coast or a traditional surf beach inside its borders.[1]
Botswana is better known for safari water than for beach holidays. The Okavango Delta offers mokoro rides through shallow channels, while the Chobe River offers wildlife cruises near the northern border.[1] These experiences feel calm and open, but they are not substitutes for swimming in the Indian Ocean.
For sand, warm sea water, and coastal resorts, add Mozambique after your safari. Listed trips include a 10-day, nine-night Botswana and Mozambique family itinerary, plus longer safari and beach holidays.[3][4] SafariFind connects travelers with verified operators, package information, and authentic reviews before they choose a route.
Quick answer: Botswana has no ocean beach in 2027. Its best water-based experiences are an Okavango Delta mokoro ride and a Chobe River cruise. Travelers who want a real beach should combine a Botswana safari with Mozambique. Listed combined trips range from 9 to 15 days, with prices reaching £8,395 per person for one 15-day example.[1][3][4]
Botswana does not have an ocean beach because it has no coastline. Its water attractions are inland, including the Okavango Delta, the Chobe River, and seasonal pans. That difference matters when you plan a holiday, because a Botswana safari and a beach break are usually two parts of one trip.[1]
Botswana sits inland in southern Africa. It does not meet the Atlantic or Indian Ocean, so it cannot offer a sea coast, tidal beach, or oceanfront resort. Its famous water settings come from rivers, floodplains, wetlands, and seasonal pans instead.[1]
That does not make Botswana a poor choice for travelers who enjoy water. The Okavango Delta spreads water through channels and lagoons, creating routes for traditional canoe trips. The Chobe River adds a different view, with boat cruises that focus on river scenery and wildlife.[1]
Known for: Botswana is known for inland safari settings, including the Okavango Delta and Chobe River. The country also includes dry areas such as the Kalahari Desert, where water can feel like a sharp contrast to the surrounding land.
Best for: Botswana is best for travelers who want wildlife, quiet water routes, guided nature trips, and a strong safari focus. It is less suitable for anyone whose main goal is a beach resort inside the country.
The answer also helps you set a realistic budget. A Botswana-only safari will not include a sea beach unless the route crosses a border. A combined trip needs extra flights, transfers, accommodation, and time, so the final price is higher than a simple inland safari.
If you want to compare routes before choosing, explore the 2027 Botswana beach and safari package guide for trip ideas and planning context.
Botswana has inland shores, wetlands, rivers, and seasonal pans rather than a normal lake coast. The word “lake” can therefore create the wrong picture. Travelers should expect reed-lined channels, floodplains, riverbanks, and salt-pan scenery instead of a large freshwater beach.
The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is a useful example. It offers a dry, open setting shaped by seasonal water, not a permanent sea shore. Nearby trips may focus on landscapes, wildlife, and cultural experiences rather than swimming or sunbathing.
Important distinction: A shore is not always a beach. A riverbank or wetland edge may give you water views, but it may not have safe swimming, soft sand, changing rooms, or resort services. Ask an operator what the activity includes before you book.
The best Botswana water experiences in 2027 are an Okavango Delta mokoro ride and a Chobe River cruise. Both give travelers water views without leaving the country. The right choice depends on whether you prefer a quiet canoe route through wetlands or a larger boat trip along a wildlife-rich river.[1]
The Okavango Delta is a wetland system where travelers can explore narrow channels by mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe. A guide usually moves the boat through shallow water while you watch the reeds, open channels, and nearby wildlife.[1]
Mokoro rides suit travelers who want a slow and quiet safari. The canoe sits close to the water, so the experience feels different from a vehicle drive. It is also a clear example of why Botswana can offer memorable water travel without an ocean shore.
The Okavango Delta is best for couples, photographers, families with suitable ages, and travelers who enjoy peaceful nature trips. Ask about safety rules, water levels, luggage limits, and the time spent in the canoe. These details shape the day more than the word “boat” suggests.
Travelers planning a longer route can also compare the 2027 Moremi walking safari and water-based options. Walking and canoe activities work well together, but each demands different footwear, clothing, and fitness.
The Chobe River is an inland water route in northern Botswana. A river cruise gives travelers a seated view of the water, riverbanks, and wildlife. It is a practical choice for visitors who want a water activity without the physical demands of walking or paddling.[1]
The Chobe National Park area is a strong fit for a safari that includes river time. Boat trips can add a new angle to a game-viewing plan, especially when you have already spent time in a safari vehicle.
Best for: Chobe River cruises are best for families, first-time safari travelers, photographers, and visitors who prefer a stable boat. They are also useful for a short water activity within a larger Botswana itinerary.
| Experience | Setting | Best for | Water style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Okavango Delta mokoro ride | Wetland channels | Quiet nature trips and close water views | Traditional canoe |
| Chobe River cruise | River and riverbanks | Families, photographers, and easy viewing | Guided boat cruise |
| Mozambique beach extension | Indian Ocean coast | Swimming, sand, and coastal rest | Sea and beach stay |
For a full Chobe plan, read how much a Chobe safari costs in 2027. Then compare the length of the safari, the river activity, and the beach extension before asking for a quote.
The simplest beach plan is to spend the first part of your trip in Botswana and then fly or transfer to Mozambique. This creates a “bush and beach” holiday, with safari days in the Okavango Delta or Chobe followed by an Indian Ocean stay.[2][3]
A combined itinerary joins inland wildlife viewing with coastal rest. The Botswana section may include a mokoro ride, game drives, or a Chobe River cruise. The Mozambique section adds sea views, beach time, and a slower end to the holiday.
One listed family itinerary covers the Okavango Delta and Mozambique across 10 days and nine nights.[3] That length gives families time to change locations without turning every day into a travel day. A shorter plan may feel rushed if it includes several camps and flights.
Another listed safari and beach holiday lasts 15 days and starts at £8,395 per person.[4] A separate 21-day small-group itinerary starts at £5,320 per person and includes Botswana and Mozambique among its destinations.[4] These examples show why trip length and travel style matter when you compare prices.
Listed combined safari and beach packages cost about $4,175 to $6,295 per person in the 2027 planning range presented by SafariFind.[1] Other listed examples use pounds, including a 15-day holiday from £8,395 per person and a 21-day small-group itinerary from £5,320 per person.[4]
These figures are examples, not one fixed rate for every traveler. Your quote can change with room type, flights, group size, safari season, beach resort, and the number of nights. Compare like with like. A higher price may include more flights, private guides, or longer stays.
For travelers comparing costs, use the 2027 Chief's Island safari itinerary guide alongside beach options. You can then request quotes from verified operators and read authentic traveler reviews before making a choice.
A 9-day trip is the shortest listed combined example in the research, while 10 days and 15 days provide more room for a relaxed route.[3][4] A 21-day itinerary suits travelers who want a longer small-group journey with several destinations.[4]
In 2027, start by choosing the trip length. Then decide whether the beach is a short finish or a major part of the holiday. That choice will shape your flights, hotel nights, and safari budget.
Before booking, confirm the exact water activity, border route, travel time, and accommodation plan. Botswana water trips are inland, while a true beach stay requires a second country. Clear questions help prevent a trip that sounds like a beach holiday but only includes river or wetland scenery.
Pack light clothing, sun protection, insect protection, comfortable shoes, and a warm layer for early starts. A mokoro trip needs clothes that can handle splashes and time outdoors. A river cruise needs the same sun protection, even when the boat feels cool.
Do not pack for a beach-only holiday. Your Botswana days may include walking, vehicle travel, canoe travel, and early departures. Your Mozambique days may need swimwear and beach clothing. Pack for both parts of the route.
SafariFind helps you compare tour operators and package details in one place. Read authentic reviews, check the route, and request a quote that lists each included service. A clear quote is worth more than a vague promise of a “beach safari.”
Botswana safety depends on the destination, activity, and current travel advice. This beach guide does not set a safety rating for Botswana, pregnancy travel, solo travel, female travelers, gay travelers, or comparisons with Namibia and South Africa. Check current government travel advice and ask a qualified medical professional about personal health needs.
The same approach applies to questions such as “how safe is Botswana Africa,” “is Botswana safe for tourists,” and “why is Botswana safe?” A reliable answer needs current advice, not a general slogan. Review transport plans, medical access, insurance terms, and operator procedures before travel.
Visa rules depend on your passport, route, and destination. Questions such as “does Botswana need visa to UK” and “do I need a visa to visit UK from Botswana” concern travel between Botswana and the United Kingdom, not a Botswana safari or Mozambique beach stay. Check the official immigration pages for your nationality.
The question “where is Protea Hotel Karridene Beach?” concerns South Africa, not Botswana. Likewise, “how many beaches in South Africa?” needs a South African coastal guide. Keep those plans separate when comparing a Botswana safari with a beach extension.
Botswana is widely chosen for its mix of wetlands, rivers, dry landscapes, and safari areas. Whether it is “the best country in Africa” or the most beautiful is a personal judgment. This guide can give you a clearer test: choose Botswana if inland wildlife and water experiences matter more than an ocean coast.
The Kalahari Desert shows the country’s dry side. The Okavango Delta shows its wet side. Places such as Ghanzi, Francistown, and Kazungula can fit wider routes, depending on the operator and itinerary.
Crocodiles can live in African rivers and wetlands, including water systems connected with Botswana safari areas. Travelers should treat all wild water as wildlife habitat. Follow the guide’s instructions, keep away from river edges, and never enter water unless an operator clearly confirms that an activity is safe.
This article does not provide economic data about Botswana’s wealth, income, or national industries. Questions such as “why is Botswana so rich,” “what makes Botswana rich,” and “how does Botswana make money” need an economic source, not a safari booking guide.
The same limit applies to “why is Botswana so poor?” Botswana should not be described with a simple label without current economic figures. Travelers who want that answer should check national statistics, development reports, and current economic research.
Botswana trip seasons depend on the region and activity. This guide does not provide a complete climate calendar or a fixed answer about the “Botswana special” season. Ask an operator for current 2027 advice based on the Okavango Delta, Chobe, the Kalahari, and your travel dates.

Botswana safety depends on your route, activity, health, and current travel advice. Check government travel guidance before departure, buy suitable insurance, and ask your operator about transport, water activities, and emergency procedures.
Crocodiles can live in rivers and wetlands in Botswana safari areas. Treat every wild waterway as a wildlife habitat, follow your guide, and do not approach the water or swim unless the operator gives clear instructions.
Many travelers value Botswana for its contrast between the Okavango Delta, Chobe River, and Kalahari Desert. Beauty is personal, but Botswana offers varied inland scenery and wildlife experiences rather than ocean beaches.
Listed combined trips cost about $4,175 to $6,295 per person in the 2027 planning range. Other examples start at £8,395 per person for 15 days and £5,320 per person for a 21-day small-group itinerary.[1][4]
Season advice changes by region and activity. Ask for current 2027 guidance based on your safari area, such as the Okavango Delta, Chobe, or Kalahari, rather than using one season rule for the whole country.

Botswana has no ocean beach, but it does offer strong inland water experiences. The Okavango Delta gives you mokoro rides through wetland channels. The Chobe River gives you guided boat trips and river views. These activities suit travelers who want wildlife and water without leaving Botswana.[1]
For a true beach holiday, pair the safari with Mozambique. A 10-day, nine-night family itinerary is one listed option, while other examples run 15 or 21 days.[3][4] Listed prices range from about $4,175 to $6,295 per person, with some longer examples priced in pounds.[1][4]

"It was not our first time in Botswana so we knew well what we wanted this year: Okavango Delta was our main goal. So we asked exactly for that and our expectations were fulfilled. We had a fantastic time in Moremi, and then Okavango. Everything was perfectly arranged: the camp for us, the staff who cared for everything we needed, food, dinner: soup, main course and ... surprise (a desert). And beautiful landscape, and animals (lions, leppards, hippos, elephants - a lot, crocs, antilopes, .....), walking, mokoro, boat. Everything we needed to have fantastic holidays. It is not our last time in Botswana, we start to plan next year...."
"We didn't know what to expect when we first met Theno Jakwa in the hotel car park in northern Botswana. After sitting down for a light dinner we were immediately made comfortable that the next two weeks would be a great experience. The next morning we set out to our first exploration of a National Park, seeing a wide variety of animals all clearly introduced by Theno. Within the first few hours we saw dozens of elephants, giraffes, impala and hippos. Details like sex, approximate age, condition and behavior were patiently explained, as were the best ways for us to interact. Over the next two weeks he continued this same approach and our animal interactions were more and more exciting as we experienced buffalo, hyenas, wild dogs, warthogs, zebras, leopards and lions. Interestingly we noticed that in addition to our family, Theno also had the respect of many of the the other vehicle guides, who would defer to his guidance in positioning vehicles around feeding or resting animals. The setup for camping was superb. My family and I camp regularly and offered to help, but everything was automatically done before we could lift a finger. We enjoyed the food as well as the casual chats each evening by the fire. We were sad when our journey finally ended, but look forward to heading back again for another trip with Theno and his team."
"I went on a safari with this company with a group of friends. Sox, the owner and operator was very good at communicating about what to expect on the safari as well as any precautions to observe around the wild animals. He was extremely well informed about all the flora and fauna given that he also grew up around the area in Botswana. His staff were also very friendly and helpful and always there to provide excellent service. Given his vast knowledge of the area, he seemed to intuitively know where we might see all of the animals, including the elusive ones, such as the leopard. As a result we saw all of the wild cats and watched with delight as we witnessed the baby lions playing. The other plus was that it was reasonably priced for a 10 day safari, far less than others I had checked and there were only 6 participants on the safari. In conclusion, I would highly recommend Sox and his company for an excellent experience of a lifetime. I came back to Canada and have recently recommended it to friends who will be going on one of his upcoming safaris. It’s not to be missed!"
"We spent 5 days in october 2021 with Sox as a guide and driver during a moving safari first in Savuti and then in Okavango. Sox was very professional and pleasant, he definitely knew where and when you are likely to find every wild animal, he was also able to make it fun for our 3 kids (aged 5 to 10). He was very nice, and made this safari an unforgettable experience for all of us. We definitely recommend to go on safari with him.
