About this safari
Eleven days through Uganda at a pace that lets each place land. It opens on the shore of Lake Victoria and closes on the Nile, and between the two it takes in mountain gorillas in Bwindi, chimpanzees in Kibale, white rhino tracked on foot at Ziwa, and the Big Five at Murchison Falls.
Two of the finest shoebill sites on earth bookend the route: Mabamba Swamp by dugout canoe at the start, the Nile Delta by boat near the end. Along the way there is the Batwa Trail to Garama Cave walked with Batwa guides, the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, the Sempaya hot springs and a working tea estate in the Fort Portal highlands.

An early start for Mabamba Swamp, a papyrus wetland on the edge of Lake Victoria and one of the most reliable places on earth to find the shoebill, a prehistoric-looking stork that stands over four feet tall. You search by dugout canoe, threading through the channels with a local guide. The afternoon is deliberately unhurried.
