Paradise & Wilderness is one of a small number of Tanzanian operators that owns the infrastructure it sells. Rather than subcontracting, the group runs 22 lodges and camps, a fleet of more than 250 4x4 vehicles and seven aircraft, operated by Unity Air and group sister company Beach Safari Airways. It employs around 1,750 people in Tanzania and a further 150 across its offices worldwide.
The company was founded by the Schoonvelde family, who have more than 30 years of experience in hospitality and tourism. They started in Europe in 1995 and in Tanzania in 2011. Paradise & Wilderness operates across the Northern Circuit, the Southern Circuit and Zanzibar, and is one of the few operators able to deliver a combined safari and beach itinerary without third-party handover.
Paradise & Wilderness is an officially registered company. It holds all business licences required to operate in Tanzania, including a TALA licence. Through its subsidiary Beach & Safari Holidays, the group is a member of the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO), the African Travel & Tourism Association (ATTA) and the Zanzibar Association of Tourism Investors (ZATI). It is also a PADI 5 Star Authorised Partner for diving around Zanzibar. Around 300 drivers and guides work for the group, the majority of them directly contracted. All of them are certified and licensed, as Tanzanian regulations require for every safari driver and guide.
Four of the group's Zanzibar accommodations hold Travelife Gold certification: Paradise Beach Resort, Zanzibar Bay Resort, Reef & Beach Resort and Dream of Zanzibar. The Northern Tanzania tour operation is recognised separately through the Travelife Partner programme for Tour Operators.
The company works primarily with travellers departing from Europe, with English, Kiswahili, German, French, Dutch, Spanish, and Italian, spoken in-house and European office hours for pre-departure support. It is best for travellers who want a single operator responsible for the whole itinerary, including the Zanzibar leg, and who value owned accommodation over agency-booked lodges. Paradise & Wilderness has more than 20,000 reviews and received a Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice Award in 2026, a recognition Tripadvisor gives to the top 10 percent of listings.
