South Africa safari prices run from about US$150 per person per day for simple travel to more than US$2,000 for private reserve stays. [2]
South Africa Safari Cost 2027: What Your Quote Includes depends on your lodge, park, transport, and guide. A seven-day trip costs about US$2,450 to US$4,550 per person at mid-range level, while luxury trips start near US$4,900. [1] Plan your dates, then compare verified packages and quote inclusions on SafariFind.
South Africa Safari Cost 2027: What Your Quote Includes is a practical guide to planning your trip budget. It explains the price of a seven-day safari, the difference between public parks and private reserves, and the costs that often sit outside the headline rate. You will also see what budget, mid-range, luxury, and walking safaris usually cover.
South Africa gives you several ways to build a wildlife trip. You can drive yourself in Kruger National Park, join a shared tour, or stay at a private reserve with guided drives. That choice changes the cost more than the country name does. A quote can look cheap until you add flights, transfers, meals, fees, or activities.
SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators and authentic traveler reviews. Its catalog covers large reserves, private camps, and smaller wildlife parks across South Africa. Use this guide to ask sharper questions before you request a quote.
Quick answer: A seven-day South Africa safari costs about US$2,524 per person at the lower published 2027 estimate. Mid-range trips often cost US$2,450 to US$4,550, while luxury trips start near US$4,900 and can pass US$10,500. Your quote may exclude flights, transfers, and park fees. [1]
South Africa Safari Cost 2027: What Your Quote Includes starts with the travel style. A seven-day mid-range safari costs about US$2,450 to US$4,550 per person. A lower published estimate places a seven-day trip near US$2,524 per person. [1] These figures help you set a budget, but they do not describe every itinerary.
South Africa safari pricing ranges from about US$150 to more than US$2,000 per person per day. Self-driving in a public park sits near the lower end. A private reserve with an all-inclusive luxury lodge sits near the higher end. [2] This wide spread explains why two quotes for the same number of days can look very different.
Kruger National Park is known for self-drive routes, public camps, and access to private reserves along its western boundary. A self-drive trip in Kruger starts near US$120 per person per day in published estimates. [6] You pay for more of the trip yourself, including fuel, vehicle hire, meals, and some activities.
Private reserves are known for guided game drives, smaller vehicles, and lodge-based stays. Mid-range private-reserve camps cost about US$350 to US$750 per person per day. Luxury lodges cost about US$1,100 to US$3,700 per person per day. [6] The higher rate often bundles more services into one nightly price.
A safari quote often includes accommodation, meals, guided game drives, and local transfers. Mid-range packages commonly include quality lodging, professional guides, most meals, and often park fees. [5] Always read the inclusion list line by line. The words "most meals" do not always mean every drink, snack, or dinner.
Travelers who want to compare destinations can review South Africa safari destinations on SafariFind before choosing a park or reserve.
A safari in South Africa costs about US$150 to more than US$2,000 per person per day. Budget trips sit near US$150 to US$350, mid-range trips near US$350 to US$650, and luxury trips near US$700 to US$1,500 or more. [2] Private lodges can cost more than those broad daily bands.
Budget safaris usually use simple lodges, public camps, shared drives, or self-drive travel. Published 2026 estimates place budget trips at US$150 to US$350 per person per day. [3] A 2027 guide places mid-range trips at US$350 to US$650 per person per day. [5] These daily figures help you compare quotes with different lengths.
Mid-range safaris suit travelers who want comfort without a private luxury lodge. They often include a quality camp, professional guiding, most meals, and park fees. [5] A seven-day mid-range trip therefore sits near US$2,450 to US$4,550 per person in published 2027 estimates. [1]
Luxury safaris use higher-end lodges, private concessions, scheduled activities, and more service. Private-concession packages are listed near US$500 to US$800 per person per night for mid-range stays. Luxury lodges are listed near US$1,500 to US$3,500 per person per night. [8]
| Trip type | Published price | Typical cost basis | Common fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | US$150 to US$350 per person per day | Simple lodging and shared drives | Independent travelers |
| Mid-range | US$350 to US$650 per person per day | Quality camp, guide, most meals | First-time visitors |
| Luxury | US$700 to US$1,500 or more per person per day | High-end lodge and guided activities | Couples and special trips |

A safari trip in South Africa costs about US$1,055.20 for a four-day Kruger and Panorama Route package, while a five-day private-concession package starts near US$2,900 per person. [7][8] These examples show how park access, lodge type, and included activities change the total.
A four-day trip can work well for travelers who add a safari to a longer South Africa holiday. It may combine Kruger with the Panorama Route, so the itinerary includes wildlife and sightseeing. The published starting price is US$1,055.20. [7] Ask whether meals, transfers, and park entry sit inside that price.
A five-day private-concession trip costs more because it uses a lodge with meals and activities. Published packages start near US$2,900 per person. [8] That price can offer a simpler booking experience, but you still need to confirm flights, drinks, tips, and travel insurance.
Hoedspruit is a useful base for many Greater Kruger itineraries. SafariFind's guide to Hoedspruit safari packages for 2027 can help you compare route ideas before you choose a lodge.
South Africa safari cost depends mainly on whether you self-drive, join a shared trip, or stay at a private reserve. Self-drive Kruger travel starts near US$120 per person per day. Mid-range private camps cost US$350 to US$750, while luxury lodges cost US$1,100 to US$3,700 per day. [6]
Self-drive travel gives you control over the route and daily pace. You need to arrange the vehicle, fuel, campsite or lodge, meals, and park entry. This model can reduce the package price, but it puts more planning work on you.
Shared guided travel offers a middle path. The operator handles the route, guide, and vehicle. A mid-range package often includes quality accommodation, professional guiding, most meals, and park fees. [5] The exact wording matters, so ask for a full list before you pay a deposit.
Luxury travel uses a higher nightly rate because the lodge and service package cost more. Private-concession rates reach US$1,500 to US$3,500 per person per night for luxury lodges. Ultra-luxury fly-in itineraries reach US$5,000 to US$9,500. [8] That level suits travelers who value privacy and time savings.
A walking safari can cost US$4,620 per person for selected 2027 departures, excluding flights. [1] It is a specialist trip, so compare its price with a standard vehicle safari only after checking the activity plan. Walking days, guide numbers, camp style, and transfers can all change the quote.
Flights, transfers, and park fees may cost extra on a published safari rate. [1] The quote should state whether the price includes international flights, domestic flights, airport transfers, fuel, meals, drinks, tips, and travel insurance. If a line is missing, ask the operator to add it in writing.
Use SafariFind to compare verified tour operators and read authentic traveler reviews before you choose between a self-drive plan and a guided safari.
A safari in South Africa would cost about US$2,450 to US$4,550 per person for seven mid-range days in 2027. [1] A budget seven-day trip can sit near the lower published estimate of US$2,524, while luxury travel starts near US$4,900 and can exceed US$10,500. [1]
Start with the number of nights, not the brochure label. A seven-day trip may include six lodge nights, a travel day, or a mix of city and safari stays. Ask the operator to show the daily plan and the number of game drives included.
South Africa has more than one safari route. You might choose Kruger National Park, Addo Elephant National Park, a private reserve near Sabi Sand, or a smaller reserve in KwaZulu-Natal. These choices affect road transfers, lodge rates, and the time you spend in a vehicle.
Travelers who want a southern route can compare Addo Elephant safari packages for 2027. Addo works well for a route that combines wildlife with the Eastern Cape coast.
A safari holiday in South Africa costs about US$2,450 to US$4,550 per person for a seven-day mid-range safari, before you confirm flights and extra fees. [1] A wider holiday with luxury lodging, private transfers, or a city stay costs more because the safari is only one part of the trip.
A holiday quote can include several regions. Cape Town, Durban, Kruger National Park, and Addo Elephant National Park may all appear in one plan. Each extra move adds time and may add a road transfer, domestic flight, or overnight stay.
Private-concession packages cost about US$2,900 per person for five days in published examples. [8] These packages often include meals and activities. The operator should still state whether drinks, transfers, park fees, and tips are included.
Getting there depends on your route and the park you choose. Ask whether the quote includes airport pickup, domestic flights, road transfers, fuel, and return transport to the airport. A low safari rate may leave these items outside the package.
For travelers adding a city stay, SafariFind's guide to Cape Town tours, safaris, and prices for 2027 can help you plan the non-safari days.
The best value comes from comparing equal trip details, not from choosing the lowest headline price. Put the same number of nights, meals, drives, transfers, and park fees beside each quote. Then compare the lodge location and guide service.
Use these steps before you book:
SafariFind listings help you compare verified operators, package details, and traveler feedback in one place. Read reviews that mention the guide and the handling of changes. A useful review tells you what happened, not only whether the traveler liked the trip.
Ask each operator the same questions. This makes a US$2,524 quote easier to compare with a US$4,550 quote. [1] The higher price may include private drives, better lodge access, more meals, or transfers that the lower quote leaves out.
For a walking-focused trip, compare the selected 2027 rate of US$4,620 with a vehicle safari. [1] Check the number of walking days and confirm that flights are separate. The cheaper option is not always the better match for your goals.

"We made our reservations with 50% down-payment way back in Feb-26, 4 months before our trip in June and balance 50% one month before departure from Singapore. We were not sure and worried a bit whether things would turn out as described and promised, as this is our first ever trip to South Africa. All our worries disappeared from the moment we were picked up upon arrival according to the itinerary, and subsequent daily trips were excellent in view of timing, routes, transports, accommodations, meals, and to the local guides and drivers assigned. Everything is above and beyond our expectations, and we sincerely thank Safari Tailors for providing us such a memorable trip of our life!"

"Communications with Mack via email were swift and comprehensible. We were picked up at the airport on arrival by our guide, Thomas, who would be with us for the whole week. We signed up for a budget camping safari, and we had a great time! The campsites were nicer than I thought they would be, and the Kiliholidays team did a great job of taking care of us the whole trip. Thomas was very accommodating, and our 'stomach engineer' did a fantastic job the whole trip. My partner and I were very impressed by the quality of the food. Thomas was an incredible driver; a few times we had to stop and help other drivers who were stuck! This was my second visit to East Africa, and I will definitely book with Kiliholidays for my third trip :) A few tips for other travelers: The sleeping mattress was a bit thin for me (my partner had no trouble!), but I found that sleeping on my back instead of my side helped. If you have sensitive hips, I'd recommend bringing something to use as a cushion, or possibly arranging for an extra mattress. The tent was high-quality and the sleeping bags were warm. We stayed in Mto wa Mbu a few nights and it was quite hot there. We brought sleeping sacks (very thin) and used those instead. Bring LOTS of insect repellent and use it often (biting flies in the daytime, mosquitoes at night). Same with hand sanitizer (public campsite toilets don't usually have soap). Granola bars are a good idea, too, if you like to snack between meals. There's not a lot of access to ice, so if you like an evening adult-beverage, just ask your guide to stop before you leave Arusha to pick up some wine. We picked up a 5-liter box of South African wine for about 25euros and it was very convenient (bring your own cups!)."

"This is the second time I have traveled with my family with GoExplore. The first time was an amazing Uganda experience (already reviewed) and this second experience with my husband to Kenya was equally amazing. Brian organized organized both tours for me and tailored them according to my wishes. As this is still the time of unsure flights and Covid difficulties, he was easily able to adapt to some changes with travel that were beyond our control. GoExplore is a boutique business that is very personalized and offers you the equal and more than a large corporate operator. The price point is compatible with group tours but you will have your own personal driver and guide for yourself and there is nothing to compare with this luxury. Because of that, you will also be able to adapt your days schedule if you wish according what you want and not what is a groups plan. We were completely happy and satisfied with all aspects of our travel (on both trips). Brian knows the safari tour industry and is constantly working to improve the business, his knowledge about lodges, the parks, restaurants and all minute aspects of the tour. He will be able to personally attest to the quality of whatever product he is recommending to you. Sammi was our driver in Kenya and we can only say that he was amazing. He knew more about wildlife (and every birds name and details) than an encyclopedia, was an amazingly adept driver in sometimes rough conditions (traffic, rough park roads, etc.) and looked out for our interests. While respecting the animals, he went above and beyond trying to make sure we saw every different animal we could. We appreciated that he obviously respected and cared about the animals we were seeing. (Not all safari drivers do and will do anything to try to get to see something up close, even while encroaching too much on their space.) We had a minor vehicle difficulty and Sammi made sure that everything went smoothly and we didn't miss a minute of our trip or schedule. He is quite an asset to GoExplore. Sammi only drives on Kenya trips but if you go to Uganda, I highly recommend Moses who was equally great. Overall, the trip was an unforgettable trip of a lifetime. If you haven't gone on a safari before, you should trip to put this on your life plan. There is nothing like it and when you plan it, you want a safari operator that will listen to your needs, wants, and budget and tailor it to fit you. GoExplore will do that in a personal way. Our lodges that Brian picked were magical and the food was outstanding. There was nothing about our trip that we would have changed. I highly recommend GoExplore if you want to travel to any of the countries they operate in. If not those countries, then reconsider them over the more commercialized ones (such as South Africa) and you won't be disappointed."

"We just finished a 2-week tour of South Africa with extension to Victoria Falls and the Monde Village Cultural Experience was one of the highlights of the entire trip. It is a must-do for anyone in the area. Tongesai (our guide) was very personable and worked with us to customize the experience. He was flexible and took time to explain many things that aren't part of the "regular tour". We had great conversations throughout the tour. He ended up dropping us off so late (8:30pm), his wife had to call him twice. He took a few pictures with us so he had alibi. :) Mr Ncube (our village host) and his family were welcoming and excited to show us their way of life. Mr Ncube's explanations of his culture, family structure, farming struggles, and discussions on many topics showed us a simple way of life, much different than our modern American ways, but it made so much sense. People here fight hard to live but they do it with a smile. They may be poor, but not in spirit. We asked many questions and received questions ourselves. It was as if I was visiting an uncle living in a rural part of a third-world country. This family made us felt at home. We wish we had more time to sit under the summer kitchen during a raining day, sharing food and chatting with these folks. We wish we could sit in the winter kitchen to hear him teach his children and grandchildren. Needless to say, we spent 4+ hrs at this experience and wanted more. I am now back to "civilization" in a nice Qatari hotel, but I kept thinking about my time in the simple Monde Village. What a breath of fresh air that was. I brought some extra clothes to give, but ended up giving as much as I could live without for the rest of my trip. A pair of sandals doesn't mean much to me, but it means a lot to people in these villages. This is 30+ hrs flight from home so it is a one-time chance to help; I had to make the best of it. If I can come back to this area, I will definitely bring more people to share in this amazing experience. I encourage all who come to Victoria Falls to add this cultural experience to their itinerary."
