A $1,500 gorilla permit can shape your entire Rwanda safari budget before you book a hotel or vehicle.
Rwanda safari cost in 2027 ranges from about $150 per person per day for basic trips to more than $2,000 per day for ultra-luxury travel. A gorilla trekking permit costs $1,500 per person for foreign visitors. A six-day safari often costs $3,000-$6,000, while the best trip length depends on your permits, parks, and budget.
Rwanda Safari Cost 2027: What Your Budget Really Buys depends on one major choice: the type of experience you want. A simple safari uses budget lodging and shared transport. A luxury trip adds high-end lodges, private vehicles, extra guides, and flexible travel plans.
Rwanda gives travelers several ways to build a safari. You can focus on gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. You can add wildlife viewing, forest walks, cultural visits, or time near Lake Kivu. Each activity changes the final bill.
As of August 2026, published 2027 estimates show a wide price range. Basic Rwanda safaris start near $150 per person per day. Ultra-luxury experiences can exceed $2,000 per person per day. Gorilla permits alone cost $1,500 per person for foreign visitors [1][3].
Quick answer: A six-day budget Rwanda safari costs about $3,000-$4,000 per person. A mid-range trip costs about $4,500-$6,000. These estimates can include permits, transport, lodging, meals, and park costs, but every quote has different inclusions [7].
This guide explains what each budget buys in 2027. It also shows where travelers often spend more than planned. Use it to compare lodge levels, permits, transport, and add-on experiences before requesting a quote.
Rwanda safari cost in 2027 falls into three broad levels: budget, mid-range, and luxury. Budget trips focus on essential services. Mid-range trips add comfort and more choice. Luxury trips use premium lodges, private transport, and a higher level of service.
Rwanda is known for mountain gorilla trekking, scenic highlands, and well-planned visitor experiences. The main gorilla destination is Volcanoes National Park, which sits within reach of Kigali by road. The drive from Kigali takes about two to three hours [6].
Gorilla trekking is the largest single cost for many visitors. A permit is reported at $1,500 per person for foreign residents and non-residents [1][8]. That fee makes a short gorilla trip cost more than a longer wildlife trip in some other destinations.
The permit does not always cover every part of your holiday. A full package may also include accommodation, transport from Kigali or Musanze, guiding, park fees, meals, and optional porter hire [5]. Ask for each item in writing before you compare two prices.
Budget Rwanda safaris cost about $150-$300 per person per day. Published estimates often include budget lodges or campsites, meals, park entry fees, and transport within the park [1]. This level suits travelers who care more about access and value than premium rooms.
Mid-range Rwanda safaris provide more room comfort and smoother travel. A six-day mid-range safari is estimated at about $4,500-$6,000 per person [7]. The total can include the gorilla permit, but you should confirm this because package design differs.
Mid-range travel often works well for couples and families. You gain better lodge locations, more privacy, and a vehicle plan that feels less rushed. You may also have more choice when adding cultural or nature activities.
Compare Rwanda safari packages and request quotes from verified operators
A Rwanda safari costs about $3,000-$4,000 for six budget days and about $4,500-$6,000 for six mid-range days. Luxury trips can move above $2,000 per person per day. These figures are planning ranges, not fixed 2027 prices, so request an itemized quote before paying [3][7].
| Name | Price | Duration | Rating | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget Rwanda safari | $150-$300 per person per day [1] | Often planned over 6 days | Not provided | Value-focused travelers and simple lodging |
| Mid-range Rwanda safari | $4,500-$6,000 per person [7] | 6 days | Not provided | Couples, families, and comfort-focused travelers |
| Luxury Rwanda safari | More than $2,000 per person per day [3] | Flexible | Not provided | Private travel and premium lodges |
| Rwanda-Uganda safari | $3,800-$8,500 per person [2] | 10 days | Not provided | Travelers wanting a longer primate journey |
A six-day budget safari is estimated at $3,000-$4,000 per person. This estimate can cover permits, transport, accommodation, meals, and other trip costs [7]. It is best for travelers who accept basic rooms and a fixed schedule.
Budget does not mean you lose the main experience. It means you control extras. Choose one major permit activity, share transport where possible, and avoid changing lodges every night. Ask whether airport transfers and meals appear in the quote.
A six-day mid-range safari is estimated at $4,500-$6,000 per person [7]. This level gives you better lodging, more flexible transport, and a stronger balance between comfort and cost.
Mid-range travel is often the clearest choice for first-time visitors. You can add a cultural stop, a forest activity, or a lake stay without choosing the highest lodge tier. However, the $1,500 gorilla permit remains a major fixed cost.
Luxury Rwanda safari prices can exceed $2,000 per person per day [3]. This price level usually reflects premium accommodation, private guiding, private vehicles, and a more flexible plan. It is not the right choice for every traveler.
Luxury buyers should compare service details, not just room photos. A useful quote lists the lodge, permit, meals, guide, vehicle, and transfers separately. This approach helps you see what the higher price actually buys [6].
SafariFind helps travelers compare package prices and read authentic reviews before choosing a tour operator. Compare 2027 Rwanda safari packages by budget and duration.
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda costs $1,500 per person for the permit, before you add lodging, transport, meals, and other services. A complete gorilla package may include accommodation, transfers, a guide, park fees, meals, and optional porter hire [1][5][8].
The gorilla trekking permit is the central cost. Published 2026-2027 guidance places the permit at $1,500 per person for foreign residents and non-residents [1][8]. Therefore, two travelers begin with $3,000 in permit costs alone.
Because the permit is so large, compare the full package total. A low daily rate may exclude the permit. Another operator may show a higher rate but include transport, meals, and lodging. The cheaper headline price is not always the cheaper trip.
Gorilla trekking packages may include accommodation, transport from Kigali or Musanze, guiding, park fees, meals, and optional extras such as porter hire [5]. Always ask the operator to label included and excluded services.
You cannot lower the official permit price through bargain shopping. You can lower the rest of the trip by choosing budget lodging, sharing transport, and keeping the itinerary focused. A short trip can work well when gorilla trekking is your main goal.
You can also add lower-cost experiences around the permit. Options may include a visit to Iby'iwacu Cultural Village, a city stay in Kigali, or a longer nature plan. Ask for the cost of each add-on instead of accepting one bundled amount.
A 10-day Rwanda-Uganda safari in 2027 is reported at about $3,800-$8,500 per person. Accommodation, season, permits, and transport affect the total [2]. This option suits travelers who want more than one country and have enough time for a longer route.
Longer travel does not always mean lower daily spending. Cross-border transport and extra permits can raise the total. Compare the full itinerary, border plan, and included activities before booking.
Start your Rwanda safari budget with the permit, then add transport, lodging, meals, and activities. This order gives you a clearer total because the gorilla permit is a large fixed cost. After that, choose the comfort level that matches your daily budget.
Decide whether gorilla trekking is essential. If it is, reserve room for the $1,500 permit first [1][8]. If it is not, you can build a broader wildlife and culture trip around a lower daily spend.
Rwanda offers more than one type of visit. You can explore Kigali, travel toward the volcanoes, visit cultural sites, or add lake time. Rubavu Beach and the Lake Kivu area can add a slower final stop.
A six-day plan is a useful starting point for comparing costs. Published estimates place six-day budget trips at $3,000-$4,000 and mid-range trips at $4,500-$6,000 per person [7]. A 10-day Rwanda-Uganda route costs about $3,800-$8,500 per person [2].
Short trips reduce hotel nights but make each transfer more important. Longer trips add lodging and meals, yet they let you spread activities across several days. Choose the duration based on your priority, not only the lowest headline price.
Ask for a quote with separate lines for the permit, lodge, meals, guide, vehicle, transfers, and park fees. This format makes two operators easier to compare. It also shows whether a low price leaves out an important service [6].
A broader itinerary can include Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Rusumo Falls, or Kamiranzovu Waterfall. These choices change the route and may change the total quote.
Travelers interested in history can add the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda or Butare. Ask your operator to show extra driving time and costs. A clear plan prevents surprise charges.
SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators and authentic reviews. Read recent traveler feedback, compare inclusions, and check how operators explain permit costs. A clear quote is a useful sign of professional planning.
The biggest extra costs are activities outside the core itinerary, upgraded lodging, private transport, and porter hire. These items can move a trip from the budget range toward the mid-range or luxury range. Ask for optional costs before you confirm your dates.
Accommodation choice strongly affects Rwanda safari cost. Budget lodges and campsites support the $150-$300 daily range [1]. Premium lodges can push the daily price above $2,000 when combined with private services [3].
Use the Volcanoes National Park lodge price guide for 2027 when comparing room levels. Focus on location, meals, transfer time, and what the rate includes. A higher room price may save time on long drives.
The road journey from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park takes about two to three hours [6]. A private vehicle gives you more control but may cost more than shared transport. Extra route changes also add fuel, driver time, and hotel nights.
Ask whether your quote includes airport pickup. Confirm the vehicle type and the number of travelers sharing it. These simple details can explain a large price gap between two similar-looking itineraries.
Extra experiences can make a Rwanda safari feel more personal. A visit to Iby'iwacu Cultural Village adds a cultural focus. A visit to Mount Karisimbi or a forest waterfall adds a trekking element.
These activities may need more time, transport, or guiding. Therefore, ask for a separate price and duration for each one. You can then remove an activity without rebuilding the whole itinerary.
SafariFind lets you compare tour operators, package details, and traveler reviews in one marketplace. Use the platform to request a quote that shows the permit, lodge, vehicle, and meals as separate costs.
Start booking by setting a total budget, choosing your main activity, and asking three operators for itemized quotes. Begin with the gorilla permit if trekking matters. Then compare the remaining services by comfort, route, reviews, and cancellation terms.
Use the 2027 Rwanda safari budget guide alongside your quotes. The guide can help you compare a basic plan with a more comfortable package. You can also review a seven-day Rwanda safari itinerary and cost plan before choosing your trip length.
A strong quote names the operator, travel dates, lodge, room type, permit status, guide, vehicle, meals, transfers, and park fees. It also states what you pay separately. This detail helps you compare value rather than only the starting price.
Do not assume that a cheap quote includes the gorilla permit. The permit alone is $1,500 per person for foreign residents and non-residents [1][8]. Ask the operator to confirm the permit in writing.
A Rwanda-only safari keeps the route simple. It works well for travelers who want gorilla trekking, Kigali, Volcanoes National Park, and a small number of add-ons. A Rwanda-Uganda route offers more variety but costs about $3,800-$8,500 for 10 days [2].
Choose the route that fits your time and energy. A focused trip can create more relaxed travel days. A longer route can add value when you want several primate and wildlife experiences.
A Rwanda safari costs about $150-$300 per person per day for budget travel. Luxury trips can cost more than $2,000 per person per day. A six-day budget trip is estimated at $3,000-$4,000, while a mid-range trip is about $4,500-$6,000 per person [1][3][7].
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda costs $1,500 per person for a permit for foreign residents and non-residents. The full experience can also include accommodation, transport, guiding, park fees, meals, and optional porter hire [1][5][8].
A Rwanda gorilla permit is included in some safari packages but excluded from others. The permit costs $1,500 per person, so ask the operator to show it as a separate line in your 2027 quote [1][8].
The road journey from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park takes about two to three hours. Your full travel time depends on airport pickup, traffic, stops, and the final lodge location [6].
A budget Rwanda safari costs about $150-$300 per person per day and often includes budget lodging or campsites, meals, park entry fees, and transport within the park. Confirm whether permits, airport transfers, and private vehicles are included [1].
Choose six days for a focused Rwanda trip and 10 days for a longer Rwanda-Uganda journey. A six-day budget safari costs about $3,000-$4,000 per person, while a 10-day Rwanda-Uganda safari costs about $3,800-$8,500 per person [2][7].
SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators, safari packages, and authentic reviews. Compare 2027 prices, check package inclusions, read traveler feedback, and request quotes before selecting your Rwanda safari.
Rwanda safari cost in 2027 starts near $150 per person per day for basic travel and can exceed $2,000 per day for ultra-luxury experiences [1][3]. Gorilla trekking adds a fixed $1,500 permit for each foreign resident or non-resident [1][8].
A six-day budget trip costs about $3,000-$4,000 per person. A mid-range trip costs about $4,500-$6,000 [7]. These ranges give you a useful starting point, but the final price depends on the lodge, vehicle, meals, permits, and activities included.
Choose a focused Rwanda itinerary if gorilla trekking is your priority. Choose a longer Rwanda-Uganda route if you want more time and variety. In either case, compare itemized quotes and read real traveler reviews before paying.

"I was working with a tour operator out of Kenya to plan a Uganda gorilla trek followed by a Kenya & Tanzania safari. For some reason, the Uganda portion started having issues with only a few weeks to go. Enter Brian Ahereza of GoExplore. Wow! Talk about fast acting and excellent service. Within 1 day, Brian arranged everything. The only thing that would have made my trip better is if I had added one extra day, but by this point, we couldn't squeeze it in, so Brian did the absolute best with what he had to work with. For starters, one of the best things that could have happened did! ANd that was to have Charles assigned as our driver/guide. We flew into Kigali, Rwanda and Charles met us at the airport and took us to our hotel. The next morning we got up for the long drive to the Nkoringo area of Bwindi. A lot of this drive is on some VERY difficult dirt roads and Charles was masterful at navigating the terrain. Furthermore, I was using offline Google Maps to track our location and there is no possible way I could have gotten to where Charles was going. We got to Nkoringo Lodge and immediately loved it. Brian had arranged for us to have one of only 2 rooms there that had on demand hot water. Our room overlooked Bwindi and we sat on the deck admiring the view. To get to the bar/dining area, we hiked up and over a ridge and the view from that side was south to the 3 volcanoes on the border of Uganda/Rwanda/Congo - absolutely beautiful! The next day we did the trek to the Nkuringo gorilla group. It was not a difficult trek until we had to cross a fast flowing stream because the gorillas had gone to that side and as soon as we crossed, they came back! So we did too. And then we found them and it was such a wonderful experience! My wife was standing next to me and a young male (7-8 years old??) suddenly turned and started walking towards us. My wife moved to the left, but our guide said to stand still. The gorilla walked right between us and as he passed, he stuck out his arm between my legs and grasped me around the thigh!!! OMG! Even though I could feel his amazing power, I did not feel in danger. Just as quickly, he let go and continued walking! After that amazing trek, we drove (another long day) up to Queen Elizabeth National Park and spent 2 nights at the Buffalo Safari lodge. We did a couple of games drives in which we saw lots of antelope, elephants, buffalo and 6 lions (all female, with one or two young males). We followed with a boat ride on the Kazenga channel which was fantastic. The next day, we drove to Kibale National Park to look for Chimps. We arrived at our wonderful lodge, the Chimpanzee Forest Guest House at about lunchtime and then headed to Kibale for our Chimp Trek. At lunch, we met a couple who showed us amazing pictures from their trek that very morning. Unfortunately for us, even with 7 groups in the forest, we could only find 2 chimp sand they were up in the trees. That happens in nature, but the real lesson is to take the morning trek!!! The next day, Charles drove us to Entebbe and our Uganda trip was over. One of my friends asked me about the birds in Uganda. My wife loves birds and by extension, I have come to love them as well. SHe asked Charles, our guide, about every single bird we saw. Charles had a very well worn copy of "Birds of East Africa". He didn't need that book because he had it memorized. Charles was a fantastic driver/guide/person! He made our trip incredibly special! I can't thank Brian, Charles and GoExplore enough for making this so special!!!"
