A one-day drive from Kigali can put you inside Akagera National Park in about two hours. [1]
Kigali to Akagera safari packages in 2027 cost about $160 to $200 for a budget self-drive trip, or $180 to $300 for a guided day safari. Three-day packages cost about $880 to $3,281 per person, based on lodging, transport, guiding, meals and activities. Book early for 2027, then compare verified operators on SafariFind.
Kigali to Akagera Safari Packages 2027: Cost Guide is a practical starting point for planning a Rwanda wildlife trip. It explains what a day safari costs, why three-day packages vary so much, and which services change the final price.
Akagera National Park is Rwanda's main savanna safari destination. It gives travelers a chance to look for lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinoceroses and other wildlife. [1] The route also works well for visitors who land in Kigali and have limited time.
The short answer is simple. A guided day trip usually costs $180 to $300 per person in the supplied 2027 pricing guide. A budget self-drive trip costs about $160 to $200. A three-day safari costs about $880 to $3,281 per person, depending on accommodation and activities.
This guide does not present one fixed rate as a promise. Safari operators build quotes in different ways. One quote may include meals and park fees. Another may show transport and guiding as separate costs. Read each package line by line before you compare it.
Kigali to Akagera safari packages are trips that start in Rwanda's capital and continue to Akagera National Park for game viewing. Short Rwanda safari packages often last one to four days and usually start and end in Kigali. [2] They suit travelers who want a clear route, a set schedule and help with transport.
Akagera National Park is a realistic add-on to a Kigali visit. A supplied one-day itinerary starts with hotel pickup in Kigali at 9:00 a.m. The drive to the park takes about two hours, followed by a game drive. [1] That schedule gives you a full day outdoors, but it also creates a long travel day.
A one-day package is usually the simplest choice. You leave Kigali, enter the park, take a game drive and return later. The package may include a driver guide, vehicle, fuel, park access and hotel pickup. Ask the operator to list each item clearly.
Akagera safari packages focus on open-country wildlife and guided game drives. The wildlife listed in the supplied itinerary includes lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinoceroses, Cape buffaloes, hippos, sitatunga, reedbucks, waterbucks, kobs and impalas. [1]
Three-day packages create more room for travel and activities. The final price depends on transport from Kigali, accommodation and guiding. [3] Meals, park fees, boat trips and extra game drives may also affect the total. Confirm these details before you compare two offers.
Short Rwanda trips can also combine Akagera with other experiences. Some 1-to-4-day packages focus on gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking and Big Five wildlife viewing. [2] These combined trips are different from an Akagera-only safari, so their price may rise sharply.
Kigali is a useful starting point because many short packages begin and end there. Travelers can add a city stay before the safari or return to Kigali after the game drive. If you want more ideas before departure, read this guide to things to do in Kigali in 2027.
The route also limits planning work. A verified operator can arrange the vehicle, driver guide and park visit in one booking. SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators, package details and authentic reviews, so you can compare the service behind the price.
Compare Kigali to Akagera safari packages for 2027 and check which trips include transport, guiding and park costs.
Kigali to Akagera safari packages cost about $160 to $300 per person for one day, based on whether you choose self-drive or a guided trip. Three-day packages cost about $880 to $3,281 per person. The wide three-day range comes from lodging, transport, guiding and activities.
| Name | Price | Duration | Rating | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget self-drive | $160 to $200 per person | 1 day | Not supplied | Independent travelers watching costs |
| Guided Akagera safari | $180 to $300 per person | 1 day | Not supplied | First-time visitors who want a driver guide |
| Multi-day Akagera package | $880 to $3,281 per person | 3 days | Not supplied | Travelers who want more time in the park |
Transportation from Kigali is one of the main price factors. Self-drive trips can cost less, but you must manage the route, vehicle and park visit yourself. A guided package adds a professional driver guide and organized transport. The supplied pricing summary also identifies accommodation and activities as major cost factors.
Accommodation creates another large difference. A basic stay and a higher-end lodge do not produce the same quote. Ask whether the price covers one or two nights, breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks. You can also compare the nightly rates in this guide to Rwanda safari lodges by budget in 2027.
Activities can change the total too. A basic package may include one game drive. A longer itinerary may add another drive, a boat activity or more guiding time. The operator should state every planned activity and any optional charge.
Park fees also need close attention. Some packages include them in the total. Others show them as a separate line. For a detailed breakdown, review the guide to Akagera National Park entry fees and safari costs in 2027.
Do not compare only the headline price. Compare the number of travelers, vehicle type, accommodation level, meal plan and guide service. A low quote may leave out fees that another operator includes.
Request a quote from verified operators for a 2027 Akagera safari and compare what each price includes before you choose.
The best Kigali to Akagera safari package matches your available time and comfort level. Choose one day when you want a quick wildlife trip. Choose three days when you want more time for game drives, a slower road schedule and a lodge stay.
One-day safaris are best for visitors with one free day in Kigali. The supplied route begins with a 9:00 a.m. pickup and takes about two hours to reach Akagera. [1] The schedule is efficient, but you should expect a long day with early travel and a return journey.
Three-day safaris are best for travelers who value time in the park. A longer trip spreads transport, game drives and lodge time across several days. It also gives the operator more room to adjust the daily plan if weather or road conditions affect the schedule.
Self-drive trips are best for experienced travelers who want control over the route. Guided trips are better for visitors who prefer a local driver guide and a ready-made plan. The cheaper choice is not always the easier choice.
The best time to book a 2027 safari is during the 2026 planning period, especially if you need a set lodge or private vehicle. This guide was updated in October 2026. Prices and availability should be confirmed with the operator before payment.
The supplied sources do not give one fixed 2027 travel season or a guaranteed wildlife calendar. Therefore, ask the operator about your chosen travel dates, road conditions and planned activities. Avoid treating an indicative quote as a final invoice.
Pack light clothing, a rain layer, walking shoes, sun protection and a water bottle. Bring a phone or camera with enough storage. A small day bag keeps your passport, medication and personal items easy to reach.
Ask your operator about luggage limits before departure. A private vehicle may offer more space than a shared vehicle. Clear answers help you avoid surprises at hotel pickup.
SafariFind helps travelers compare safari packages and tour operators in one place. Read authentic reviews, check package details and request a quote before you commit. That simple check can expose missing services or unclear fees.
Akagera does not need to be your only Rwanda stop. You can use SafariFind's Rwanda safari guide to compare other routes and experiences. The right add-on depends on your time, budget and interest.
These places are separate from an Akagera day trip. Do not assume that a Kigali to Akagera quote includes them. Ask for a revised itinerary and a new total if you want to add another destination.
Start by choosing one day or three days, then set a clear budget. A one-day trip costs about $160 to $300 per person in the supplied guide. A three-day package costs about $880 to $3,281. Those figures help you choose the right quote before you contact an operator.
Choose one day if Akagera is a quick part of a wider Rwanda visit. Choose three days if wildlife is a main reason for your trip. Short Rwanda packages commonly last one to four days and often start and end in Kigali. [2]
A budget self-drive trip gives you more control over timing. A guided trip gives you a driver guide and organized transport. A lodge-based package gives you more structure and usually costs more than a basic day visit.
Be honest about your comfort level. If you have never driven in a large park, a guided trip may reduce stress. If you want to manage the day yourself, ask about vehicle rules, route details and support.
Ask the operator to separate the main costs. The quote should show transport from Kigali, accommodation, guiding, meals, park fees and activities. Three-day Akagera pricing depends on transport, accommodation and guiding, according to the supplied tour information. [3]
Ask whether the quote is per person or per vehicle. Ask how many people share the vehicle. Ask if hotel pickup and return transfer are included. These questions are basic, but they prevent many price disputes.
Some Rwanda packages combine Akagera with gorilla trekking or chimpanzee tracking. [2] Those trips can cost much more because they add permits, extra transport and more nights. A luxury Rwanda package with gorilla trekking is advertised from $5,500 per person for five days, but that is not an Akagera-only price. [8]
Keep your comparison fair. Compare Akagera-only packages with other Akagera-only packages. Compare combination trips with similar combination trips. This method gives you a more useful view of value.
Request a final itinerary before you pay. It should show pickup time, drive plan, accommodation, meals, activities and return details. Keep the operator's contact information with your travel documents.
Read reviews with care. Look for comments about communication, vehicle condition, guide knowledge and whether the final service matched the quote. SafariFind's marketplace is designed to help travelers compare verified operators and authentic traveler reviews.
A Kigali to Akagera safari costs about $160 to $200 per person for a budget self-drive trip, or $180 to $300 for a guided one-day experience. A three-day safari costs about $880 to $3,281 per person, depending on accommodation, transport, guiding and activities.
The drive from Kigali to Akagera National Park takes about two hours in the supplied one-day itinerary. That itinerary includes hotel pickup in Kigali at 9:00 a.m., followed by a game drive inside the park. [1] Your operator should confirm the exact pickup and return times.
Akagera wildlife listed in the supplied itinerary includes lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinoceroses, Cape buffaloes and hippos. It also lists sitatunga, reedbucks, waterbucks, kobs and impalas. [1] Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, so ask your guide about the planned game-drive route.
One day is enough for a quick Akagera visit from Kigali. The route can include hotel pickup, a two-hour drive and a game drive. A three-day package is better if you want more time for wildlife viewing, lodge stays and extra activities.
A three-day Akagera safari package usually depends on transport from Kigali, accommodation and guiding. [3] Packages may also include meals, park fees, game drives and boat activities. Ask the operator to list each service because inclusions differ between quotes.
You can compare Kigali to Akagera safari packages on SafariFind, read authentic reviews and request quotes from verified tour operators. Compare the full itinerary instead of choosing the lowest headline price. Confirm availability, inclusions, payment terms and cancellation rules before booking.
Kigali to Akagera safari packages in 2027 cost about $160 to $300 per person for one day, while three-day trips cost about $880 to $3,281 per person. The main price drivers are transport from Kigali, accommodation, guiding and activities.
Choose a guided day trip if you have limited time and want a simple plan. Choose three days if wildlife is central to your Rwanda visit. Ask for a written quote that separates park fees, meals, lodging and game drives.
Remember that a luxury Rwanda package with gorilla trekking can start at $5,500 for five days. [8] That price belongs to a wider trip, not a basic Akagera safari, so keep your comparisons fair.
Compare verified safari packages on SafariFind to find your preferred dates, trip length and budget. You can also read traveler reviews and request a quote from a verified operator. As 2027 planning continues, early comparison gives you more time to check availability and make a confident choice.

"I was working with a tour operator out of Kenya to plan a Uganda gorilla trek followed by a Kenya & Tanzania safari. For some reason, the Uganda portion started having issues with only a few weeks to go. Enter Brian Ahereza of GoExplore. Wow! Talk about fast acting and excellent service. Within 1 day, Brian arranged everything. The only thing that would have made my trip better is if I had added one extra day, but by this point, we couldn't squeeze it in, so Brian did the absolute best with what he had to work with. For starters, one of the best things that could have happened did! ANd that was to have Charles assigned as our driver/guide. We flew into Kigali, Rwanda and Charles met us at the airport and took us to our hotel. The next morning we got up for the long drive to the Nkoringo area of Bwindi. A lot of this drive is on some VERY difficult dirt roads and Charles was masterful at navigating the terrain. Furthermore, I was using offline Google Maps to track our location and there is no possible way I could have gotten to where Charles was going. We got to Nkoringo Lodge and immediately loved it. Brian had arranged for us to have one of only 2 rooms there that had on demand hot water. Our room overlooked Bwindi and we sat on the deck admiring the view. To get to the bar/dining area, we hiked up and over a ridge and the view from that side was south to the 3 volcanoes on the border of Uganda/Rwanda/Congo - absolutely beautiful! The next day we did the trek to the Nkuringo gorilla group. It was not a difficult trek until we had to cross a fast flowing stream because the gorillas had gone to that side and as soon as we crossed, they came back! So we did too. And then we found them and it was such a wonderful experience! My wife was standing next to me and a young male (7-8 years old??) suddenly turned and started walking towards us. My wife moved to the left, but our guide said to stand still. The gorilla walked right between us and as he passed, he stuck out his arm between my legs and grasped me around the thigh!!! OMG! Even though I could feel his amazing power, I did not feel in danger. Just as quickly, he let go and continued walking! After that amazing trek, we drove (another long day) up to Queen Elizabeth National Park and spent 2 nights at the Buffalo Safari lodge. We did a couple of games drives in which we saw lots of antelope, elephants, buffalo and 6 lions (all female, with one or two young males). We followed with a boat ride on the Kazenga channel which was fantastic. The next day, we drove to Kibale National Park to look for Chimps. We arrived at our wonderful lodge, the Chimpanzee Forest Guest House at about lunchtime and then headed to Kibale for our Chimp Trek. At lunch, we met a couple who showed us amazing pictures from their trek that very morning. Unfortunately for us, even with 7 groups in the forest, we could only find 2 chimp sand they were up in the trees. That happens in nature, but the real lesson is to take the morning trek!!! The next day, Charles drove us to Entebbe and our Uganda trip was over. One of my friends asked me about the birds in Uganda. My wife loves birds and by extension, I have come to love them as well. SHe asked Charles, our guide, about every single bird we saw. Charles had a very well worn copy of "Birds of East Africa". He didn't need that book because he had it memorized. Charles was a fantastic driver/guide/person! He made our trip incredibly special! I can't thank Brian, Charles and GoExplore enough for making this so special!!!"
5★ - "I’m a wildlife photographer, and in May 2025, I went on an 8-day private photo safari organized by Brian, the owner of GoExplore Safari. The goal was to photograph Uganda’s wildlife highlights: gorillas in Bwindi, big ca" - Jason Chen • Verified review
"I’m a wildlife photographer, and in May 2025, I went on an 8-day private photo safari organized by Brian, the owner of GoExplore Safari. The goal was to photograph Uganda’s wildlife highlights: gorillas in Bwindi, big cats in Queen Elizabeth, chimpanzees in Kibale, and the rare Shoebill Stork in Mabamba Swamp. The itinerary was well thought out, and everything ran smoothly. I flew into Kigali, Rwanda, which I highly recommend if you're heading to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi — much closer and more convenient than Entebbe. If photography is your priority, I also suggest booking two gorilla treks or considering Mgahinga. I only did one, and while it was incredible to see them, capturing strong images was difficult. The rainforest is thick, lighting tricky, and your movement limited — just something to keep in mind. Mozes, my guide, was outstanding. He’s punctual, safe, knowledgeable, and has a clear love for wildlife. He studied tourism, understands photography, and even shared stories from past conservation work, like relocating giraffes from Murchison Falls to Kidepo. He always positioned the car for the best angles and made the drives smooth and productive. Our first stop was Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, just five minutes from Rushaga Gate. The lodge was cozy, well-designed, and mosquito-free, with great coffee and local food — an ideal base for gorilla trekking. In Queen Elizabeth, we had four full days of game drives. I like to go hard on photography, so we were out from sunrise to sunset. One major perk with GoExplore is you can plan your own drive schedule within park hours (6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). On our first day, we stayed until closing — the only car left in Kasenyi Plains. That kind of flexibility made a huge difference. I also recommend the optional lion and leopard tracking. You’re still in your private vehicle, but a tracker joins you and leads off-road directly to the cats. We spent nearly four hours with a leopard and her cubs in a cactus tree — truly a dream scenario for any photographer. Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale was another highlight. The chimps came down from the trees and moved through the forest, and we followed them. The one-hour viewing stretched to 2.5 hours. For photography, it’s better to wait until they’re on the ground — the real action happens there. On the final day, we went to Mabamba Swamp to see the Shoebill. From a photography standpoint, it’s the best place in Africa to photograph this rare bird. The canoe brings you to water level, with clean backgrounds and soft light — a perfect setup. Uganda in late May was lush, green, and surprisingly dry — just one short rainstorm. The scenery, wildlife, and people made it a beautiful place to explore. If you’re considering Uganda, book with GoExplore — and if you can, request Mozes. His experience and attention to detail made the entire trip not just productive, but truly enjoyable. Huge thanks to Brian and Mozes for making it all happen!"
