The best time for a Kafue safari in 2027 is June through October, when dry conditions support strong wildlife sightings. July suits travelers who want cool, dry weather, while October is popular for safari departures. A three-day Kafue tour is listed at US$713 per person for April 29 to May 1, 2027. [2][3]
One Kafue safari season gives you dry trails and concentrated wildlife, while another brings green scenery and strong birdwatching. That choice matters more than many first-time visitors expect. Kafue National Park is large, remote, and spread across different habitats, so the month you choose shapes the game drives, access, and camp options you can use.
The Best Time for a Kafue Safari in 2027: Month-by-Month Guide starts with a simple answer. June through October is the strongest overall window for wildlife sightings and weather. July is a good pick for cool, dry conditions, while October is a popular month for safari departures. [1][3]
This guide breaks down every month for 2027. It also explains shoulder seasons, the Busanga Plains opening period, sample prices, and booking steps. SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators, so you can compare Kafue packages and read authentic traveler reviews before choosing a camp.
Quick answer: Visit Kafue National Park between June and October for the best balance of dry weather and wildlife viewing. Choose July for a cool, dry safari, or October for a popular departure period. Visit November through April for green scenery, fewer tourists, birdwatching, and calving-season sightings. [1][3][5]
June through October is the best overall time for a Kafue safari in 2027. This dry-season window is recommended for wildlife sightings and weather. July is especially appealing for travelers who prefer cooler, dry conditions, while October has the greatest number of listed safari departures. [1][2][3]
Kafue National Park is easier to read during the dry months. Wildlife has fewer water sources to use, so animals often gather near rivers, floodplains, and other water points. The dry season also gives travelers a clear time window for classic game drives. Adventure Life identifies June through October as the recommended period for sightings and weather. [3]
July is a strong choice for a first Kafue trip. Naturalist Journeys schedules a 2027 itinerary with a Kafue National Park extension for July 20 to 31. That date gives travelers a clear example of how Kafue fits into a wider Zambia safari. [1]
October is a practical choice when departure choice matters. TourRadar highlights October as the most popular month for Kafue safaris, with the greatest number of departures. Popular dates can fill early, so October travelers should compare packages before flights and rooms become harder to match. [2]
Known for: Kafue's dry-season safari window, strong wildlife viewing, open game-drive conditions, and access to the Busanga Plains from June through November. [3][6]
Best for: first-time safari travelers, photographers seeking wildlife near water, and visitors who want a clear dry-season plan. If you are still comparing Zambia regions, read the guide to Kafue National Park safari packages for 2027 before requesting quotes.
Compare Kafue safari packages for June to October 2027 and review available operators before you choose travel dates.
The wet season generally runs from November through April. Safari.com describes this period as greener and quieter, with fewer tourists, strong birdwatching opportunities, and calving-season sightings. Travelers who care most about birds, new-born animals, and green scenery may prefer these months over the busy dry season. [5]
The wet season is not a poor choice. It is a different choice. You trade the classic dry-season focus for richer plant growth, fewer visitors, and a wider birding appeal. Ask your operator which camps and roads work for your chosen month before booking.
June through October gives the clearest dry-season plan, while November through April brings green scenery and fewer tourists. April and May, plus September and October, are shoulder-season periods. These months can combine parts of wet and dry season, making them useful for travelers who want a middle ground. [5]
| Month | Season guide | Best for | Planning note |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Wet season | Birdwatching, green scenery, calving-season sightings | Confirm camp access before booking |
| February | Wet season | Quieter travel and birdwatching | Ila Safari Lodge is listed as closed in February 2027. [4] |
| March | Wet season | Green landscapes and fewer tourists | Check the operating dates of each camp |
| April | Wet season and shoulder season | Birdwatching, green scenery, and early shoulder-season travel | A listed tour runs April 29 to May 1, 2027. [2] |
| May | Shoulder season | A blend of wet- and dry-season benefits | Good month to compare early dry-season options |
| June | Dry season | Wildlife sightings and dry weather | Busanga Plains access begins in the June to November window. [3][6] |
| July | Dry season | Cool, dry safari conditions | A Kafue extension is scheduled for July 20 to 31, 2027. [1] |
| August | Dry season | Wildlife-focused game drives | Book early for peak dry-season dates |
| September | Dry season and shoulder season | Dry-season viewing with a shoulder-season option | Compare dates before October demand rises |
| October | Dry season and shoulder season | Popular departures and wildlife viewing | TourRadar identifies October as the most popular month. [2] |
| November | Wet season begins | Green scenery and the final Busanga access window | Busanga Plains are accessible through November. [6] |
| December | Wet season | Quieter travel and birdwatching | Check lodge dates and road plans |
January through March fall within Kafue's general wet season. These months suit visitors who want green scenery, fewer tourists, birdwatching, and calving-season sightings. [5] February needs extra care because Ila Safari Lodge is listed as closed during February 2027. [4]
January, February, and March are best planned around the camp rather than around a fixed dry-season wildlife goal. Ask for the exact lodge opening dates, transfer plan, and activities. That simple check can prevent a mismatch between your preferred month and your chosen camp.
April and May are useful transition months. Safari.com describes April and May as shoulder-season periods that combine wet- and dry-season advantages. April 29 to May 1, 2027 also has a listed three-day Kafue tour priced at US$713 per person at the time shown. [2][5]
A short April trip can work well for travelers with limited leave. A longer May stay gives you more time to explore Kafue's varied habitats. Neither month should be treated as a simple copy of July. Ask the operator how the itinerary changes with road and camp conditions.
June through August is the heart of the dry-season recommendation. Wildlife sightings and weather are the main reasons to choose this window. July stands out for its cool, dry season, and the July 20 to 31, 2027 Kafue extension offers a firm date for travelers planning a multi-park trip. [1][3]
The Busanga Plains are accessible from June through November. Travelers focused on this area should plan inside that period and confirm the exact camp dates. [6] For another Zambia walking option, compare the timing and costs in the guide to Luangwa Valley walking safari packages for 2027.
September and October sit near the end of the dry-season window and the start of shoulder-season planning. October is popular for departures, so it can suit travelers who want more scheduled choices. November marks the start of the wet season, yet the Busanga Plains remain accessible through November. [2][5][6]
December returns to the wet-season pattern. Choose it for green scenery, fewer tourists, and birdwatching rather than for the classic dry-season focus. Kafue is a large park, so your operator's camp plan matters as much as the month itself.
Start with your main goal, then match the month to it. Choose June through October for dry-season wildlife viewing, November through April for birds and green scenery, and April, May, September, or October when you want a shoulder-season balance. Then check camp dates, access, price, and transfer details. [3][5]
Safari pricing depends on the itinerary and camp, so use listed prices as planning markers rather than promises. The three-day southern Kafue tour from April 29 to May 1, 2027 is listed at US$713 per person at the time shown. [2]
Ila Safari Lodge lists 2026 rates of US$2,410 per person sharing, US$3,370 for a solo traveler, and US$1,200 per child aged five to fifteen. Its listed July 1 to October 31 rate is US$3,730 per person sharing. These figures are useful when building a 2027 budget, but ask for the current 2027 quote. [4]
Compare 2027 Kafue safari prices and request quotes from verified operators before paying a deposit. Read the authentic reviews beside each package, then check what the price includes.
Getting there: Build your transfer plan around the itinerary and camp location. A listed Ila Safari Lodge package includes complimentary return light aircraft flights from Lusaka. [4] Travelers can also add time in Lusaka before or after the park. For wider planning, see the guide to Lusaka in 2027.
Dry-season travelers should plan for cool mornings and warm daytime drives. Wet-season travelers need clothes and bags that cope with rain. Keep your packing simple. Light layers, closed shoes, sun protection, and a small day bag cover most safari days. Your operator can give the final packing list.
July is one of the best months for a Kafue safari in 2027 because it falls in Zambia's cool, dry season. June through October is the wider recommended window for wildlife sightings and weather. Naturalist Journeys lists a Kafue extension for July 20 to 31, 2027. [1][3]

"On 10.9. until 1.10. In 2023, I went on a trip to Botswana, Zimbabwe and a short visit to Zambia with my clients - friends. I carefully prepared the trip in cooperation with the manager of Cultural Vibes Travel & Tours, Mr. Tongesai Mutematsaka. After arriving in Gaborone we organized a short tour of the city ourselves and met Tongesai in Maun. Tongesai was our driver and guide practically the whole way. We visited the Okavango River Delta and its surroundings (Moremi Reserve, Mokoro boat cruise, flight over the Okavango Delta. This was followed by a visit to the Makgadikgadi Salt Flats, then the Elephant Sands area and in Botswana Chobe National Park with a cruise on the Chobe River. Then we crossed to Zimbabwe, which was the main part of our journey. In the Victoria Falls area, we visited the Monde settlement, took a helicopter flight over Victoria Falls, followed by a cruise on the Zambezi River as part of a visit to the national park of the same name. We also walked past Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side and had a Boma dinner in the evening (too much of a "tourist thing"). On the Zambian side of the falls we saw white rhinos in Mosi - oa - Tunya National Park, then visited the museum in Livingstone and walked the Zambian side of the falls. From Victoria Falls, we headed to Hwange National Park, where we had a beautiful program - a safari, and after Hwange, there was also a very interesting program in Matobo National Park (there, among other things, white rhinos (a mother with her little daughter), beautiful rock formations and prehistoric cave drawings. The next place visited was Khami with very interesting buildings, and then we visited the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, which are among the most important world monuments. This was followed by a visit to the Chinhoya Karst and finally the gallery in Harare. I would also like to comment on the provision of services: Accommodation in the hotels was at the standard, expected level, only the service at the Great Zimbabwe Hotel was rather lazy. Accommodation in lodges - very good and the best accommodation was in Iganyana tented camp in Hwange National Park, mainly due to the extraordinary professionalism and very friendly attitude of the staff there towards us, the visitors. I must also highly praise all the local guides we met everywhere, e.g. in Chobe, Hwange and Matobo National Parks. I want to emphasize that this journey is one of the most interesting that I have made around the world. I believe that my clients - friends were also satisfied with the set. Thanks to the travel agency Cultural Vibes Travel & Tours and Mr. Tongesai Mutematsaka. I recommend Cultural Vibes Travel & Tours to anyone considering a trip to Zimbabwe."

"Tongesai was awesome from the start. I knew he was a good tour operator because he answered all of my questions in a timely manner and no question was ever stupid. Everything was just as he said once we arrived and really it was better. We prepared for about a year in advance for this trip and the tour operator was instrumental and making this trip a success. I highly recommend this tour operator to anyone who wants to visit Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Botswana. Give Tongesai a call or email, and you will 100% not be disappointed. I have a very deep understanding of border crossing and transportation challenges in many African countries at this point because of the efforts of the tour operator. This makes my wife and I have very comfortable to approach another visit or look at visiting a different African country."
