Rwanda is landlocked, yet Lake Kivu gives beach lovers a choice of sandy bays, wooden piers, island trips, and sunset cruises. [1]
The best beaches in Rwanda are on Lake Kivu, especially around Gisenyi, Kinunu, Kibuye, Cyanungu, and Ishara Beach. Costs depend on your lodge, transport, and activities, so compare 2027 package quotes before booking. The best time to visit is the travel period covered by current 2026 and 2027 planning guides. [1][4][8]
The best beaches in Rwanda are found beside Lake Kivu, a large Great Rift lake in the country's west. This makes Rwanda a beach destination even though it has no ocean coast. [1][5] The lake has resort areas, public bays, quiet gardens, boat routes, and shores suited to a slow afternoon.
Gisenyi is the easiest place to start. It has a public bay, a wooden pier, beach bars, and access to private sands. [1] Kinunu offers a smaller beach beside Rushel Kivu Lodge's sloping gardens. Ishara Beach sits near the southern end of the Congo Nile Trail and has free sunbeds beside a public bar.
This guide focuses on seven Lake Kivu shore experiences for 2027. It explains what each place is known for, who should visit, and which activities fit best. It also covers swimming, canoeing, kayaking, island trips, fishing, and birdwatching.
Lake Kivu is a strong choice if you want rest after a gorilla trek or safari. You can pair the lake with Volcanoes National Park, a Kigali city stay, or a longer route through Rwanda.
Quick answer: Rwanda has beaches on Lake Kivu, with the best-known areas around Gisenyi, Kibuye, Kinunu, Cyanungu, and Ishara Beach. Gisenyi suits first-time visitors who want easy access and beach bars. Kinunu and Ishara suit travelers who prefer smaller, quieter lake stops.
Yes, Rwanda has beaches beside Lake Kivu, even though the country is landlocked. Gisenyi has a hedge-lined public bay, a wooden pier, nearby beach bars, and private sands. [1] Lake Kivu beach areas offer swimming, sunbathing, boat trips, and views across the water.
Lake Kivu is Rwanda's main beach destination. Travel guides describe Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Cyanungu as places to relax beside the lake. [5] These areas are different from ocean resorts, but they still provide water access, sandy or pebbled shorelines, boats, and places to sit by the water.
The word "beach" can mean different things around Lake Kivu. Some shores have a public bay or open sand. Others sit beside a lodge garden, public bar, or boat landing. Therefore, check the exact shore setting before you choose a hotel or package.
| Lake Kivu shore | Known for | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Gisenyi public bay | Hedge-lined bay and wooden pier | First-time visitors and easy lake access |
| Gisenyi private sands | Private beach areas near lively beach bars | Sunbathing and social afternoons |
| Kinunu | Small beach beside Rushel Kivu Lodge gardens | Quiet relaxation and lodge stays |
| Ishara Beach | Free sunbeds and a public bar | Independent travelers and Congo Nile Trail stops |
| Kibuye | Lake views and access to water activities | Relaxing stays and boat trips |
| Cyanungu | A calm Lake Kivu area for rest | Travelers seeking a slower shore stop |
| Lake Kivu island shores | Boat and kayak access to lake islands | Exploration, photography, and paddling |
Gisenyi is the most practical first stop for many visitors. The public bay gives you a clear place to begin, while nearby private sands offer a different setting. The wooden pier also creates a simple viewpoint over the water. [1]
Kinunu is smaller and more personal. Its beach sits beside the gardens of Rushel Kivu Lodge, so the setting suits travelers who want a quiet lake break. Ishara Beach offers a useful stop near the Congo Nile Trail, with free sunbeds and a public bar.
Kibuye and Cyanungu suit travelers who care more about calm views than a busy beach scene. Lake Kivu island shores work best as part of a boat or kayak trip. They are lake experiences rather than one named public beach.

Lake Kivu beaches support swimming, sunbathing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, island hopping, sunset cruises, and mokoro rides. [2][7] Your best choice depends on whether you want active time on the water or a quiet day beside it.
Swimming and sunbathing are the simplest ways to enjoy Lake Kivu. Gisenyi gives you public and private shore options. Kinunu offers a smaller beach beside lodge gardens. Ishara Beach adds free sunbeds beside a public bar.
Check local guidance before entering the water. Ask your lodge or guide about the chosen swimming area, boat traffic, weather, and safe access. A beach beside a boat landing is not the same as a marked swimming area.
Boating is one of Lake Kivu's main visitor activities. Canoes and kayaks let you explore the shore at a slower pace. Island hopping adds a change of scenery without leaving the lake region. [2][7]
Kayaking suits travelers who want exercise and close views of the shoreline. A boat trip suits families, couples, and visitors who want to cover more water. Sunset cruises offer a softer pace and work well after a morning of sightseeing.
Fishing gives Lake Kivu a local food link. Guides mention Isambaza, Tilapia, and Indugu among the fish found in the lake. [2] Ask your operator which fishing trips follow local rules and which gear they provide.
Shore-based birdwatching is another low-key activity. Pied kingfishers are among the birds mentioned around Lake Kivu. [2] Bring binoculars, stay quiet near the water, and plan early or late in the day for softer light.
Mokoro rides create a close-to-the-water experience. Sunset cruises and island trips add more range to a beach holiday. [7] These activities make sense if you want your Lake Kivu stay to include more than a chair and a view.
Lake Kivu beaches are best used as part of a wider Rwanda route. A two-night lake stop can balance a busy wildlife or trekking schedule. For a wider plan, read the 5-day Rwanda safari itinerary for 2027.
Plan enough time for one full lake day and one activity day if you want to swim, rest, and explore by boat. A shorter visit can still work for a sunset cruise or beach stop. A longer stay gives you time to compare Gisenyi with quieter areas such as Kinunu or Cyanungu.
Gisenyi is best for easy access, Kinunu is best for quiet lodge time, Ishara Beach is best for a simple public stop, and Kibuye or Cyanungu are best for a slower lake stay. Island shores are best for travelers who want boating, kayaking, and a view beyond the mainland.
Gisenyi is the clearest starting point for a first Lake Kivu visit. Its public bay has a wooden pier, and private sands sit near beach bars. [1] You can mix a short swim with lunch, a walk, or a boat trip.
Gisenyi also works well at the start or end of a western Rwanda route. Visitors can connect the lake with a visit to Rubavu Beach, the local area linked with Gisenyi.
Kinunu is best for travelers who prefer a small beach and a garden setting. The beach sits beside Rushel Kivu Lodge's sloping gardens. [1] This creates a calmer choice than a busy resort bay.
Use Kinunu for reading, resting, gentle walks, and a slow meal. Add a boat trip if you want more movement without changing your base.
Ishara Beach is near the southern end of the Congo Nile Trail. It has free sunbeds and a public bar, making it a practical place to pause during a longer route.
Ishara suits travelers who value a simple stop over a large resort. Check your day's route before setting out, then confirm the beach access and activity plan with your guide.
Kibuye and Cyanungu are two Lake Kivu areas identified for rest and relaxation. [5] They suit travelers who want time beside the lake, with boating and other water activities available in the wider region.
Kibuye is a useful base for travelers building a longer lakeside route. Cyanungu works well when your priority is a quiet shore and time away from a full sightseeing schedule.
Lake Kivu island shores are best for kayaking, canoeing, boating, and island hopping. [2][7] They give you a reason to leave the beach for a few hours and see the lake from the water.
Choose a guided trip if you have limited lake experience. Carry sun protection and water, and keep your schedule flexible around wind and local boat conditions.
Check the exact shore, water access, included activities, transport, and room location. A lodge beside Lake Kivu may offer a garden view rather than direct sand access. A public beach may offer a bar and sunbeds but fewer private services.
SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators and authentic traveler reviews. Request quotes from verified Rwanda tour operators and compare 2027 Lake Kivu routes before choosing your stay.
Start by choosing your shore, then match it with the rest of your Rwanda route. Gisenyi works well for an easy first stop. Kinunu, Ishara Beach, Kibuye, Cyanungu, and island trips suit travelers who want a quieter or more active lake plan.
Kigali is a natural starting point for many Rwanda holidays. From there, travelers can build routes that include Lake Kivu, wildlife areas, cultural visits, or mountain trekking. The right order depends on your chosen parks, lodges, and travel dates.
Lake Kivu can follow a demanding activity. A calm beach day after trekking gives your body time to rest. Travelers planning gorilla trekking can read the 2027 Kinigi gorilla trekking permit guide before adding a lake stay.
Decide whether your main goal is swimming, sunbathing, kayaking, fishing, birdwatching, or a boat ride. Then ask your operator to place the activity near your lodge and travel route. This saves time and avoids treating every lake stop as the same.
Pack swimwear, a light cover-up, sun protection, insect repellent, drinking water, and a dry bag. Add binoculars if birdwatching matters to you. Wear shoes that work on uneven shore ground, especially when moving between a lodge, boat landing, and beach.
Keep valuables secure during swimming and paddling. Follow your guide's instructions near boats and water edges. Ask before taking photographs of staff, residents, or other visitors.
Use marked access points and keep public shores clean. Do not leave plastic, food waste, or fishing line behind. Keep noise low near homes, lodges, and birdwatching areas.
Lake Kivu is a lived-in region, not an empty resort zone. Buy local food or crafts through trusted businesses when possible. Ask permission before photographing people, boats, or private property.
A Lake Kivu stay can sit inside a wider Rwanda holiday. You could add Kigali, Iby'iwacu Cultural Village, or a wildlife route. Travelers interested in another water stop can also read about Lake Muhazi day tours in 2027.
Compare the full route rather than choosing a beach in isolation. A slightly longer transfer may give you a better mix of lake time, wildlife, culture, and rest.

"I was working with a tour operator out of Kenya to plan a Uganda gorilla trek followed by a Kenya & Tanzania safari. For some reason, the Uganda portion started having issues with only a few weeks to go. Enter Brian Ahereza of GoExplore. Wow! Talk about fast acting and excellent service. Within 1 day, Brian arranged everything. The only thing that would have made my trip better is if I had added one extra day, but by this point, we couldn't squeeze it in, so Brian did the absolute best with what he had to work with. For starters, one of the best things that could have happened did! ANd that was to have Charles assigned as our driver/guide. We flew into Kigali, Rwanda and Charles met us at the airport and took us to our hotel. The next morning we got up for the long drive to the Nkoringo area of Bwindi. A lot of this drive is on some VERY difficult dirt roads and Charles was masterful at navigating the terrain. Furthermore, I was using offline Google Maps to track our location and there is no possible way I could have gotten to where Charles was going. We got to Nkoringo Lodge and immediately loved it. Brian had arranged for us to have one of only 2 rooms there that had on demand hot water. Our room overlooked Bwindi and we sat on the deck admiring the view. To get to the bar/dining area, we hiked up and over a ridge and the view from that side was south to the 3 volcanoes on the border of Uganda/Rwanda/Congo - absolutely beautiful! The next day we did the trek to the Nkuringo gorilla group. It was not a difficult trek until we had to cross a fast flowing stream because the gorillas had gone to that side and as soon as we crossed, they came back! So we did too. And then we found them and it was such a wonderful experience! My wife was standing next to me and a young male (7-8 years old??) suddenly turned and started walking towards us. My wife moved to the left, but our guide said to stand still. The gorilla walked right between us and as he passed, he stuck out his arm between my legs and grasped me around the thigh!!! OMG! Even though I could feel his amazing power, I did not feel in danger. Just as quickly, he let go and continued walking! After that amazing trek, we drove (another long day) up to Queen Elizabeth National Park and spent 2 nights at the Buffalo Safari lodge. We did a couple of games drives in which we saw lots of antelope, elephants, buffalo and 6 lions (all female, with one or two young males). We followed with a boat ride on the Kazenga channel which was fantastic. The next day, we drove to Kibale National Park to look for Chimps. We arrived at our wonderful lodge, the Chimpanzee Forest Guest House at about lunchtime and then headed to Kibale for our Chimp Trek. At lunch, we met a couple who showed us amazing pictures from their trek that very morning. Unfortunately for us, even with 7 groups in the forest, we could only find 2 chimp sand they were up in the trees. That happens in nature, but the real lesson is to take the morning trek!!! The next day, Charles drove us to Entebbe and our Uganda trip was over. One of my friends asked me about the birds in Uganda. My wife loves birds and by extension, I have come to love them as well. SHe asked Charles, our guide, about every single bird we saw. Charles had a very well worn copy of "Birds of East Africa". He didn't need that book because he had it memorized. Charles was a fantastic driver/guide/person! He made our trip incredibly special! I can't thank Brian, Charles and GoExplore enough for making this so special!!!"
5★ - "I’m a wildlife photographer, and in May 2025, I went on an 8-day private photo safari organized by Brian, the owner of GoExplore Safari. The goal was to photograph Uganda’s wildlife highlights: gorillas in Bwindi, big ca" - Jason Chen • Verified review
"I’m a wildlife photographer, and in May 2025, I went on an 8-day private photo safari organized by Brian, the owner of GoExplore Safari. The goal was to photograph Uganda’s wildlife highlights: gorillas in Bwindi, big cats in Queen Elizabeth, chimpanzees in Kibale, and the rare Shoebill Stork in Mabamba Swamp. The itinerary was well thought out, and everything ran smoothly. I flew into Kigali, Rwanda, which I highly recommend if you're heading to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi — much closer and more convenient than Entebbe. If photography is your priority, I also suggest booking two gorilla treks or considering Mgahinga. I only did one, and while it was incredible to see them, capturing strong images was difficult. The rainforest is thick, lighting tricky, and your movement limited — just something to keep in mind. Mozes, my guide, was outstanding. He’s punctual, safe, knowledgeable, and has a clear love for wildlife. He studied tourism, understands photography, and even shared stories from past conservation work, like relocating giraffes from Murchison Falls to Kidepo. He always positioned the car for the best angles and made the drives smooth and productive. Our first stop was Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, just five minutes from Rushaga Gate. The lodge was cozy, well-designed, and mosquito-free, with great coffee and local food — an ideal base for gorilla trekking. In Queen Elizabeth, we had four full days of game drives. I like to go hard on photography, so we were out from sunrise to sunset. One major perk with GoExplore is you can plan your own drive schedule within park hours (6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). On our first day, we stayed until closing — the only car left in Kasenyi Plains. That kind of flexibility made a huge difference. I also recommend the optional lion and leopard tracking. You’re still in your private vehicle, but a tracker joins you and leads off-road directly to the cats. We spent nearly four hours with a leopard and her cubs in a cactus tree — truly a dream scenario for any photographer. Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale was another highlight. The chimps came down from the trees and moved through the forest, and we followed them. The one-hour viewing stretched to 2.5 hours. For photography, it’s better to wait until they’re on the ground — the real action happens there. On the final day, we went to Mabamba Swamp to see the Shoebill. From a photography standpoint, it’s the best place in Africa to photograph this rare bird. The canoe brings you to water level, with clean backgrounds and soft light — a perfect setup. Uganda in late May was lush, green, and surprisingly dry — just one short rainstorm. The scenery, wildlife, and people made it a beautiful place to explore. If you’re considering Uganda, book with GoExplore — and if you can, request Mozes. His experience and attention to detail made the entire trip not just productive, but truly enjoyable. Huge thanks to Brian and Mozes for making it all happen!"
